Emil Krafth injury update has reshaped Sweden’s right-back picture ahead of the March international break, with Newcastle United’s defender now unlikely to feature again this season.

The 31-year-old has made just one Premier League appearance and two EFL Cup outings for Newcastle this campaign. His limited club role already affected his international involvement, but a recent injury has further complicated matters.

Krafth last featured in Sweden’s 1-1 World Cup qualifying draw against Slovenia in November, playing 65 minutes. He has not appeared since.

Emil Krafth injury leaves Sweden short at right-back

Sweden head coach Graham Potter had initially left Krafth out of his November squad before recalling him due to concerns over Leeds United defender Gabriel Gudmundsson’s fitness.

However, both Krafth and Bologna’s Emil Holm are now sidelined. Newcastle manager Eddie Howe recently suggested the Swedish defender may not return before the end of the season.

According to Fotboll Direkt, Hammarby’s Hampus Skoglund is emerging as a potential beneficiary of the situation. Potter attended Hammarby’s 2-0 cup win over Brage on Friday, where Skoglund played the full 90 minutes at right-back.

Skoglund admitted he was unaware the Sweden manager was watching.

“No, I had no idea. But the fact that he was there is a good sign,” he said. “There aren’t many right-backs in the national team, and the goal is of course to get there.”

When informed that Krafth and Holm are injured, he responded candidly.

“Yeah… I didn’t know it was that bad. Unlucky for them that they’re injured, but lucky for someone else who can take that spot in that case.”

Newcastle future uncertain

Krafth’s contract at St James’ Park runs until the end of the season, and as it stands he is expected to leave as a free agent.

Having followed Newcastle’s defensive rotation this season, his role has diminished significantly amid increased competition and tactical reshaping. Injury has compounded that reality.

However, it remains subject to confirmation whether the defender could recover in time for any late-season involvement, though Howe’s comments suggest that is unlikely.
