Emeka Adiele has explained why he chose to leave West Ham United on deadline day, admitting he “couldn’t say no” to FC Utrecht while also highlighting the influence of Jarrod Bowen during his time in east London.
The 18-year-old completed a permanent move to the Eredivisie side at the end of the winter window, bringing an end to his spell at West Ham without making a senior appearance for the club.
West Ham pathway blocked for young defender
Adiele progressed through West Ham’s academy system but found opportunities limited at first-team level. With El Hadji Malick Diouf and Oliver Scarles established as the club’s recognised left-backs, a clear pathway into the senior squad proved difficult.
His contract at the London Stadium was due to expire in June, placing his future under scrutiny and attracting interest from several European clubs. Reports in the Netherlands indicated that Utrecht beat competition from Juventus and Borussia Dortmund to secure his signature.
‘I couldn’t say no’ to Utrecht move
Speaking to Utrecht’s official channels, with his comments relayed by Utrecht Fans, Adiele confirmed that he had multiple options available but felt the Dutch club stood out.
“I had a few options, of course, but I think FC Utrecht is the best fit for me. Everything they told me and what the club stands for, I wanted to be a part of. I couldn’t say no,” — Emeka Adiele
The defender added that Utrecht’s determination to sign him was decisive.
“It was just different from the other clubs. They wanted to do everything they could to get me and really had faith in me. More than other clubs,” — Emeka Adiele
Bowen praised as West Ham role model
Adiele also reflected positively on his time at West Ham, pointing to the standards set by senior players and singling out Jarrod Bowen as a key influence.
“I’ve learned a lot, especially from the senior players. Who was the leader there? Jarrod Bowen. Everyone looks up to him. He’s a leader on and off the pitch,” — Emeka Adiele
The youngster believes those lessons will serve him well as he begins the next stage of his career in the Netherlands.

What’s Next
Adiele will now look to settle quickly at FC Utrecht and push for regular first-team football in the Eredivisie. With a fresh start and clear backing from his new club, the defender will aim to translate his academy experience into senior minutes and continue his development away from the Premier League spotlight.
Was a move abroad the right decision for Adiele’s development, or should West Ham have found a way to keep hold of another academy prospect?
