Edu Gaspar contract situation delays next move after Nottingham Forest exit

Edu Gaspar’s departure from the Nottingham Forest structure is proving more complicated than initially expected, with contractual details potentially delaying his next move in football.

The former Arsenal sporting director remains tied to Evangelos Marinakis’ multi club football group, which oversees Nottingham Forest, Olympiacos and Rio Ave. According to reports in Brazilian media, Edu still has four years remaining on his contract with the organisation.

That situation means negotiations over a potential exit are continuing behind the scenes and could take time to resolve.

Edu’s agreement with Marinakis’ football group reportedly runs for another four seasons. Because of that, any immediate departure would require a financial settlement between the parties.

Reports indicate that the former Brazil international would only consider terminating the deal if he receives compensation worth roughly half of the remaining contract value.

In practical terms, that would equate to around two years of salary, with Edu willing to waive the other two years in order to end the agreement earlier.

Until a settlement is reached, his ability to move freely into another executive role in football could remain restricted. As a result, discussions around his departure are progressing cautiously rather than quickly.

Evangelos Marinakis’ ownership structure includes several clubs across Europe, most notably Nottingham Forest in the Premier League alongside Olympiacos in Greece and Rio Ave in Portugal.

Edu’s position within that wider structure has reportedly diminished in recent months, but the contractual framework linking him to the organisation remains in place.

Because of the length of the agreement, resolving the situation requires negotiation between both sides regarding financial terms and timing.

However, it remains too early to determine exactly when or how an agreement might be reached.

Even if his exit from the Marinakis group is eventually finalised, a return to Brazil does not currently appear to be the most likely outcome for Edu.

Having followed recruitment structures across European football for many years, particularly during his successful spell at Arsenal, the former midfielder is believed to see his strongest career opportunities remaining on the continent.

There are also personal factors tying him closely to Europe. Edu maintains a base in London where he works regularly, while his youngest son currently plays in Portugal at youth level.

Those connections mean he frequently divides his time between England and Portugal.

Discussions between Edu and the Marinakis football group are expected to continue in the coming weeks as both sides attempt to reach a financial settlement. Only once the contractual situation is resolved will the former Arsenal executive be able to fully consider his next role in football. Given his established network and experience within European recruitment structures, any future position is likely to emerge within Europe rather than South America.
