After eight glittering years at Manchester CityEderson Moraes says he simply “needed this change.” The Brazilian goalkeeper has spoken candidly about the reasons behind his decision to leave Pep Guardiola’s side for Fenerbahçe, revealing that his move was about rediscovering joy and motivation after a difficult final season in England.

During his time at City, Ederson became one of Guardiola’s most trusted players — a cornerstone of six Premier League titles, five domestic cups, and the club’s first-ever Champions League triumph. Yet, despite winning 18 trophies in Manchester, the 32-year-old admits that the fire that once drove him began to fade.

Ederson on why he left Manchester City

Reflecting on his 2025 summer departure, Ederson told Brazilian media:

“All cycles come to an end. Players come and go, but the club always remains. I had eight wonderful years wearing the City shirt and won 18 titles, but I needed this change and a change of scenery. When Fenerbahçe came along, I embraced it.”

A series of injuries last season — five in total — disrupted his rhythm and contributed to his desire for a fresh start. The arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma from Paris Saint-Germain for £26 million also signalled that his time as City’s undisputed No.1 was ending.

Finding passion again in Turkey

Since joining Fenerbahçe in August, Ederson has quickly fallen in love with the club and the country’s football culture.

“Sometimes it’s really good to have new challenges in your life, in your career,” he said. “It brings new energy, many positive things. With this change, I’m breathing football again and feeling the atmosphere of the games in Turkey, which is crazy. I’m very happy with this challenge.”

He added that helping Fenerbahçe end their long wait for a domestic title is now his top motivation:

“The club hasn’t won a national title in a long time. I hope I can help bring back that glory and take the club to the top.”

Guidance from trusted voices

Ederson revealed that his choice of Fenerbahçe was influenced by people he deeply respects, including Cláudio Taffarel, Brazil’s legendary goalkeeping coach and Galatasaray icon.

“I had a brief conversation with Taffarel, even though he played for their rival. He spoke wonders about the city, the culture, and the Turkish people,” Ederson said. “I also spoke with Brazilians who played for Fenerbahçe, who spoke very highly of the club, the city, and the climate. That made the decision even easier.”

Attempted exit before final season

The goalkeeper also admitted that his decision to leave City wasn’t spontaneous — he had previously tried to engineer a move away before the 2024/25 campaign.

“In a previous season I had already tried to leave, but it didn’t work out,” he said. “I had five injuries and wasn’t at my highest level. I needed this change. There’s no point being at a giant, winning club if you’re not happy.”

That honesty underscores the personal toll of life at the top, even for one of football’s most decorated goalkeepers.

Return to Brazil’s national team

Ederson’s revival in Turkey has already earned him a recall to Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil squad for November friendlies against Senegal and Tunisia. With the 2026 World Cup fast approaching, he knows each appearance could strengthen his claim to start ahead of Alisson Becker.

“There’s always great anticipation now that the World Cup is so close,” he said. “I was left out of the last few call-ups because of injury, so my expectations are high. The only one guaranteed a spot is Ancelotti — he’ll have a headache choosing the 23 players.”

Our View: A champion rediscovering his spark

In our view, Ederson’s move to Fenerbahçe is a refreshing reminder that success isn’t just measured by silverware but by satisfaction. After nearly a decade under relentless pressure at City, his search for happiness and balance feels justified. The Turkish Super Lig’s intensity and passion may prove the perfect stage for him to reignite the joy that first defined his career.

If his early performances continue to impress, both Fenerbahçe and Brazil could reap the benefits of a goalkeeper reborn.
