Donyell Malen’s loan move from Aston Villa to Roma is already being described as a “great marriage”, with his former coach Bryan Roy insisting the switch was destined to succeed.

The Netherlands international joined the Serie A side on an initial loan, with an obligation to buy included in the agreement. Given his early impact in Italy, that clause now looks set to be activated.

Malen has scored five goals in all competitions since arriving in Rome and struck twice against title-chasing Napoli on 16 February 2026.

His sharp movement, direct running and composure in front of goal have quickly endeared him to supporters. Gian Piero Gasperini was reportedly influential in bringing him to the club, identifying him as a tactical fit for Roma’s attacking structure.

Bryan Roy, who worked with Malen during his development years, believes the environment suits him far better than the Premier League.

“He’s perfect for Roma and for Italian football, in my opinion,” Roy told Tuttomercatoweb.

“It’s truly a great marriage between Malen and Roma.”

Roy added that Italy’s tactical culture aligns with the 27-year-old’s strengths more than English football did.

“As soon as I heard he could go there, I thought: this deal will work out great. Italy has a culture that suits him perfectly, more so than the English one.”

Financial upside for Aston Villa

Aston Villa signed Malen from Borussia Dortmund in January 2025 for a total package worth around €26m. Roma’s obligation to buy stands at €25m.

While the figure appears marginally lower, structured payments and accounting factors could still allow Villa to record a favourable financial outcome.

During his time in Birmingham, Malen delivered 12 goal contributions in 46 appearances but struggled for consistent starts.

From recent Villa campaigns we’ve covered, squad competition and tactical reshuffles often limited attacking continuity. Roma appear to be offering a clearer, more defined role.
However, it remains dependent on sustained form over the coming months before the permanent deal is confirmed.

Key Insights

  • Malen has five goals since joining Roma on loan.
  • Obligation to buy set at €25m.
  • Bryan Roy describes move as a “great marriage”.
  • Italian football viewed as better tactical fit.
  • Villa recouping major portion of initial €26m outlay.

What’s Next

Roma’s obligation clause is expected to be triggered provided Malen remains fit and continues contributing.

For Aston Villa, the focus shifts to reinvestment strategy ahead of the summer window. Much will depend on how Unai Emery reshapes the forward line once the transfer is finalised.

Has Malen finally found the environment to unlock his full potential?
