Dominik Szoboszlai has admitted Liverpool are struggling to understand why they continue to let opponents back into games, as the Reds’ grip on the Premier League title race continues to loosen.

The midfielder was speaking shortly before Liverpool’s 0-0 draw away at Arsenal, a result that extended their unbeaten run but did little to close the gap at the top of the table.

Szoboszlai questions Liverpool’s recent lapses

Dominik Szoboszlai was reflecting on both his personal year and Liverpool’s form when he spoke to Hungarian broadcaster Spíler TV, with Blikk later relaying his comments.

While Liverpool remain difficult to beat, Szoboszlai admitted frustration at how often they allow teams to feel competitive against them.

“We must not let these teams back into the games or not let them in at all,” he said.

“They must not feel that they have a chance against us. Unfortunately, we cannot bring this to the field at the moment. I don’t know why.”

Strong start followed by costly drop-off

Liverpool opened the season with five consecutive Premier League wins before hitting a difficult stretch. Between September and the end of November, Liverpool managed just three league victories from 12 matches.

That period included Champions League wins over Eintracht Frankfurt and Real Madrid, but domestically the dropped points began to mount.

The downturn led to scrutiny of Arne Slot, while sections of the German media even floated the idea of Jürgen Klopp returning to Anfield.

Unbeaten run masks underlying issues

Liverpool have since stabilised and are unbeaten in their last 10 matches in all competitions, but draws have proven costly. Points have been dropped against Leeds United (twice), Sunderland, Fulham and Arsenal.

Those results leave Liverpool fourth in the Premier League table, now 14 points behind leaders Arsenal, making a title defence increasingly unrealistic.

Szoboszlai accepted that reality, even if he refused to abandon hope entirely.

“I will never give up, not even the championship,” he said.

“But we have to think realistically, as we are 14 points behind Arsenal.”

Focus turns to cup competitions

With the league picture bleak, Szoboszlai believes Liverpool must now prioritise the competitions still within reach.

“However, we still have two competitions ahead of us in which we are still in the game — the Champions League and the FA Cup,” he explained.

“These are the ones we have to keep in mind now.”

He pointed to recent European history as a reminder that momentum can shift quickly, referencing Paris Saint-Germain’s Champions League triumph after an unconvincing group-stage campaign.

“If we look at it, last year PSG barely made it out of the regular season of the Champions League and they won it in the end,” Szoboszlai added.

“Why can’t we be what they are now?”

Key insights

  • Szoboszlai admits Liverpool are unsure why they keep dropping points
  • The midfielder says opponents feel they have too much belief
  • Liverpool are unbeaten in 10 but have drawn five of those games
  • The title race looks out of reach with a 14-point gap to Arsenal
  • Focus is shifting towards the FA Cup and Champions League

What’s next

Liverpool’s immediate challenge is turning resilience into authority. Remaining unbeaten is no longer enough if the Reds continue to invite pressure and allow games to drift.

For Szoboszlai and his teammates, the coming weeks will determine whether this season is remembered as a missed opportunity in the league — or a successful cup campaign built on renewed control and belief.

Can Liverpool rediscover the authority Szoboszlai says is missing — or will this season be defined by too many games left unfinished?
