Inter Milan are growing increasingly concerned that Liverpool could activate Denzel Dumfries’ €25m release clause this summer, with fresh reports in Italy claiming the Reds still hold strong interest.

Journalist Niccolò Ceccarini, writing for Tuttomercatoweb, states that Inter must “fend off the onslaught” from European giants ahead of the 2026/27 season. Dumfries is among the players attracting sustained attention, particularly from Liverpool.

Denzel Dumfries €25m release clause alarms Inter

The 29-year-old returned to action against Bodø following a three-and-a-half-month injury layoff, immediately reigniting transfer talk. Crucially, his €25m release clause becomes active in July and is valid only for this summer window.

According to Ceccarini, clubs view that figure as affordable in the current market. For a proven international right-back with Champions League experience, the valuation stands out.

Liverpool had already explored a move during the January window. Reports at the time suggested contact was made, with the clause central to their thinking. A deal did not materialise before the deadline, but interest appears to have remained intact.

Why Liverpool remain in the frame

Liverpool’s right-back situation has been inconsistent this season. Jeremie Frimpong and Conor Bradley have both struggled with injuries at various stages, forcing tactical adjustments.

Having followed Liverpool’s defensive structure closely, stability in that position has been lacking. Dumfries’ physicality and direct attacking style could offer a more established option.

However, it remains too early to suggest Liverpool will definitely trigger the clause. Internal priorities and summer budgeting will shape their final decision.

Inter, for their part, would prefer to renew Dumfries’ contract and remove the clause altogether. At present, there is no clear indication that negotiations are progressing in that direction.

Key Insights

  • Dumfries has a €25m release clause active in July.
  • Liverpool previously made contact in January.
  • Inter are concerned about strong summer interest.
  • The clause applies only for the 2026 summer window.
  • Contract renewal talks have not removed the risk.

What’s Next?

The situation is likely to intensify once the July window opens and the clause officially becomes live. Liverpool would not need prolonged negotiations if they decide to proceed.

Inter’s immediate objective will be securing contractual clarity. If no extension is agreed before July, the club’s leverage weakens significantly.

Will Liverpool move swiftly once the clause activates, or will Inter find a way to protect one of their key assets?
