Background: Postecoglou’s Uncertain Future

With just four Premier League games left, Tottenham Hotspur sit perilously close to a 17th-place finish despite Ange Postecoglou steering them towards a Europa League final. Eighteen domestic defeats have left the board exploring high-calibre managerial replacements. While Bournemouth’s Andoni Iraola tops many wish-lists, another name—Roberto De Zerbi—has emerged as a compelling alternative in this De Zerbi vs Iraola Tottenham manager debate.

Tottenham’s Managerial Wishlist

Several coaches have been linked with the Spurs job in recent weeks:

  • Marco Silva (Fulham): Transformed the Cottagers since 2021.
  • Thomas Frank (Brentford): Built a resilient side post-Toney.
  • Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth): Proven promotion specialist with a 4-2-3-1 system.
  • Roberto De Zerbi (Marseille): Tactician praised as a 4-2-3-1 “genius” by analysts.

Yet it’s in the De Zerbi vs Iraola Tottenham manager comparison where Spurs’ technical director Johan Lange sees real potential for rekindling the club’s identity.

Tactical Fit—4-2-3-1 Formation

Both De Zerbi and Iraola favor a 4-2-3-1 shape, which could shore up Tottenham’s defence while unleashing creative talents like James Maddison or Dejan Kulusevski in the No.10 role. De Zerbi’s insistence on two holding midfielders offers extra cover for a high back line—a tweak that might curb the defensive frailties seen under Postecoglou.

Recent Records Compared

Manager Games Wins Draws Losses Pts/Game
Roberto De Zerbi (Brighton) 89 38 20 31 1.51
Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth) 82 33 19 30 1.44
De Zerbi (Marseille) 54 28 7 19 1.81

Key Stat Call-Out

  • De Zerbi averages 1.51 PPG in England vs. Iraola’s 1.44 PPG.
  • 1.81 PPG at Marseille shows De Zerbi’s big-club credentials.

What’s Next?

Tottenham’s owners will decide this summer whether to pursue the De Zerbi vs Iraola Tottenham manager route. De Zerbi’s experience at Marseille under pressure may give him the edge, but Iraola’s promotion pedigree cannot be ignored.

I wanted this guy so bad at Chelsea before we got Maresca. He's doing an amazing job at Marseille and would be a good fit for the squad the Spurs have now.
