Sunderland's pursuit of Dayann Methalie has become even more complicated after Toulouse reportedly increased their asking price for the highly-rated left-back to €40 million, while Newcastle United and several European clubs continue to monitor the situation.

The Black Cats have made the France Under-21 international one of their priority targets this summer, but multiple bids have already been rejected by the Ligue 1 club.

According to La Dépêche, Toulouse president Olivier Cloarec has now made the club's position clear: "€40 million or nothing."

Toulouse refuse to lower demands

Sunderland’s latest offer of €33 million would have represented a club-record sale for Toulouse, but it was still turned down.

The French side had initially been seeking around €30 million before increasing their valuation to €35 million earlier this week. That figure has now reportedly risen again, with Toulouse refusing to negotiate below €40 million.

Despite the escalating price tag, there remains an expectation that Methalie will leave before the transfer window closes if a club meets the valuation.

Newcastle and European rivals monitoring

Toulouse's firm stance is strengthened by interest from elsewhere.

Newcastle United, Bayer Leverkusen and Lille are all credited with tracking the 20-year-old, while Lille have reportedly revived their interest in recent days.

However, it remains unclear whether any of those clubs are prepared to meet Toulouse's €40 million valuation.

For now, Sunderland are still believed to be leading the race after making four offers, although they must now decide whether to increase their bid once again or walk away from negotiations.

Key points

  • Toulouse have increased Dayann Methalie's asking price to €40 million.
  • Sunderland have already seen four bids rejected.
  • Newcastle United, Bayer Leverkusen and Lille are also interested.
  • Lille have reportedly renewed their pursuit of the defender.
  • Sunderland remain in pole position but face a decision over whether to improve their offer.

What's next?

Sunderland must now decide whether to return with a fifth bid closer to Toulouse's €40 million valuation. With rival clubs continuing to monitor the situation, the coming days could prove decisive in determining whether the Black Cats can secure one of their leading transfer targets.
