Beating Arsenal has become difficult enough. Beating David Raya has proven even harder.

As the Gunners prepare to welcome Brighton to the Emirates Stadium on 27 December, Raya stands on the brink of a personal milestone — and potentially another entry into the Premier League record books.

Raya closing in on Arsenal landmark

David Raya is set to make his 150th appearance for Arsenal in all competitions if he starts against Brighton. It would be another marker in a spell that has seen the Spaniard establish himself as one of the most reliable goalkeepers in English football.

Since making his Premier League debut for Brentford — coincidentally against Arsenal in August 2021 — no goalkeeper has kept more clean sheets in the competition. Raya currently sits on 58 Premier League shutouts, and could raise that to 59 this weekend.

Having initially arrived on loan in August 2023 before completing a permanent move the following summer, Raya has been central to Arsenal’s transformation into the league’s most defensively efficient side.

Saliba and Gabriel: the foundation

Raya’s numbers are not built in isolation. In front of him, William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhaes have developed into one of the Premier League’s most formidable centre-back pairings.

Since first lining up together in 2022/23, the duo have played 129 matches alongside one another. Arsenal have lost just 21 of those games in all competitions, with only 12 Premier League defeats — and just one this season, a narrow 1-0 loss away to Liverpool.

Their absence has been keenly felt. Arsenal have not fielded their preferred pairing since a 2-2 draw at Sunderland on 8 November, after both defenders picked up injuries. That match was also notable for being the first time Arsenal conceded twice in a league game with Saliba and Gabriel together since November 2024.

A historic defensive metric

Even without their first-choice pairing, Arsenal’s defensive output this season has been remarkable.

According to Opta, Arsenal are conceding an average of 2.18 shots on target per Premier League match — the lowest figure ever recorded in the competition’s history.

That number has actually been inflated by recent fixtures against Chelsea and Aston Villa, where Arsenal allowed four and six shots on target respectively. In both matches, Saliba and Gabriel were not paired together at centre-back.

Against Chelsea, summer signings Piero Hincapié and Cristhian Mosquera were deployed centrally. Two games later versus Villa, Hincapié partnered Jurrien Timber, with Ben White and Riccardo Calafiori operating as full-backs. Arsenal failed to win either contest, drawing 1-1 with ten-man Chelsea and losing 2-1 late on to Villa.

Saliba’s return already telling

Encouragingly for Mikel Arteta, Saliba has completed the full 90 minutes in Arsenal’s last three matches. Across those games, the Gunners have conceded just four shots on target, underlining his importance to the defensive structure.

Gabriel, meanwhile, is edging closer to a return after suffering a muscle injury on international duty with Brazil in November. He has resumed individual training and is targeting a comeback in January — timing that could prove decisive.

With Arsenal holding a slender two-point lead at the top of the Premier League table heading into the festive period, restoring their preferred defensive axis could be as valuable as any January signing.

Key insights

  • David Raya is set to make his 150th Arsenal appearance
  • He has kept more Premier League clean sheets than any goalkeeper since 2021
  • Arsenal concede a record-low 2.18 shots on target per game
  • Saliba’s return has already reduced defensive workload
  • Gabriel could return in January

What’s next?

Saturday’s clash with Brighton offers Raya the chance to reach his 150-game milestone and further extend his clean sheet tally. Beyond that, attention will turn to Gabriel’s reintegration and whether Arsenal can sustain their historically low defensive workload across a punishing run of fixtures.

If Saliba and Gabriel are reunited soon, Arsenal’s title credentials — already strong — may yet be reinforced further.

Can Arsenal’s defensive unit power them through the festive period — and keep David Raya rewriting the record books?
