David Datro Fofana approves Auxerre move as Chelsea talks accelerate

Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana has given his approval to leave Stamford Bridge once again, with a move to Auxerre now accelerating as negotiations progress rapidly.

According to journalist Marc Mechenoua, talks between Chelsea and the Ligue 1 side have been ongoing for several days and, despite early complications, have now moved into a more advanced phase.

Auxerre are actively exploring a deal to sign David Datro Fofana before the end of the transfer window. Initial discussions centred on a loan move, but Chelsea’s conditions made the operation complex.

However, Mechenoua reports that progress has been made behind the scenes, with Auxerre now awaiting final approval from Chelsea to complete the deal.

The proposed agreement would be a loan with an option to buy, which would only be triggered if Auxerre avoid relegation from Ligue 1.

One key obstacle has already been removed. Fofana has given his full approval to the move, signalling his willingness to continue his development away from Stamford Bridge.

That consent has helped accelerate talks, with Auxerre confident the remaining negotiations are now club-to-club rather than player-related.

Auxerre currently sit in the bottom two of Ligue 1, level on 12 points and just two behind 16th-placed Nantes. Their precarious position explains why the purchase option is directly linked to survival.

From Chelsea’s perspective, this structure allows them to protect the striker’s long-term value while offering Auxerre an incentive-based pathway to a permanent transfer.

Since joining Chelsea in 2023, Fofana has struggled to establish himself in west London and has spent successive spells on loan at Union Berlin, Burnley, Göztepe and Fatih Karagümrük.

He returned from his most recent loan earlier this month and now looks set for another temporary exit before January concludes.

Having followed Chelsea’s loan strategy closely in recent seasons, this move fits a familiar pattern: prioritising minutes and market exposure while keeping long-term flexibility.

Auxerre are now waiting for Chelsea’s final green light to complete the agreement. If approved, the striker could complete the move before the end of the month, giving him another chance to reset his career in Ligue 1.

However, the deal remains subject to formal confirmation and Auxerre’s league position could still shape the final structure.
