Manchester United youngster Darlington Osuchukwu joins Athletic Club

Manchester United academy goalkeeper Darlington Chichoro Osuchukwu has completed a move to Athletic Club after deciding to continue his development in Spain, despite the Premier League side's efforts to keep hold of one of their most highly rated young prospects.

According to AS, Athletic successfully convinced the 16-year-old and his family that the Basque club offered the ideal environment for his long-term development, with their renowned record of producing top-class goalkeepers proving decisive.

Osuchukwu had attracted interest from several European clubs, including Borussia Dortmund, Lille, Anderlecht and Copenhagen, but Athletic ultimately won the race for his signature.

Manchester United reportedly viewed Osuchukwu as a player with significant potential and had hoped to retain him as part of the club's academy system.

However, Athletic's reputation for developing young goalkeepers, together with the club's long-term project, persuaded both the player and his family that a return to Spain represented the best next step in his career.

Born in Murcia to Nigerian parents, Osuchukwu moved to England in 2020 before joining Manchester United's academy in November 2021. His rapid development at Old Trafford also earned him recognition at international level, becoming a regular with Spain's youth teams after attending an Under-17 training camp in 2025.

Before completing the move, Osuchukwu shared an emotional message on social media thanking Manchester United for the role the club played in his development.

"After some unforgettable years at this incredible club, I have taken the difficult decision to take on a new challenge.

"It is impossible to put into words just how much this club has meant to me. Representing United has been one of the greatest privileges of my young career."

For Athletic, the signing represents another investment in one of Spain's brightest young goalkeeping talents. For Manchester United, it is the loss of a promising academy player who was highly regarded internally but ultimately chose a different pathway to senior football.

Osuchukwu is expected to complete the final formalities of his move before joining Athletic Club's academy setup ahead of the new season. The Spanish club will hope the teenager continues the impressive development that attracted attention across Europe, while Manchester United turn their focus to nurturing the next generation of goalkeeping talent at Carrington.
