Leeds United manager Daniel Farke has admitted he may spring a tactical surprise when Newcastle visit Elland Road this weekend.
The Whites began life back in the Premier League with a convincing opening-day victory over Everton, but a 5-0 hammering by Arsenal and a limp Carabao Cup exit to Sheffield Wednesday have since brought expectations back down to earth.
With midfielders Ethan Ampadu and Ao Tanaka both injured, Farke is short of options. Ilia Gruev and Anton Stach are expected to start, while new arrival Sean Longstaff could be handed a start against his former club. But the German coach has strongly hinted that he could “set up differently” to compensate for the lack of midfield depth.
Farke Press Conference Quotes
“A bit tricky. It’s a bit thin, but we will find some solutions. Might set up differently. I won’t say too much, but we still have options.” — Daniel Farke
Farke also confirmed that attackers Largie Ramazani and Isaac Schmidt have been allowed to travel for talks with other clubs, while he expects up to two new forwards could still arrive before the transfer deadline.
Why Farke May Switch Systems
With midfield depth stretched, Farke could opt for a back three to bring greater defensive solidity, freeing wing-backs to support the attack. Alternatively, he may double down on energy in midfield, giving Longstaff the chance to prove Newcastle wrong for letting him leave.
The decision will also be shaped by Newcastle’s own injury problems, with striker Alexander Isak ruled out.

The numbers highlight Leeds’ early inconsistency — a strong opener followed by a collapse at Arsenal and lack of intensity against Sheffield Wednesday.
Analyst Verdict
FootballPlace analyst John William believes Leeds are in a delicate balancing act:
“Farke is right to hint at flexibility. Losing Ampadu and Tanaka robs Leeds of stability. Against Newcastle’s high press, going with a different system may be the only way to avoid being overrun. The key will be whether Longstaff and Stach can control the middle.”
He added: “The bigger issue is up front. Farke knows Leeds need one or two attackers before the window closes. If they don’t strengthen, their survival battle could start earlier than expected.”

What’s Next for Leeds United?
Leeds host Newcastle at Elland Road this weekend in what already feels like a key test for Farke’s tactical adaptability. A win would restore belief, while another defeat could see doubts grow quickly.
Off the pitch, attention turns to the final days of the transfer window. Leeds’ ability to land attacking reinforcements may define their campaign. For now, all eyes are on whether Farke’s “team shock” materialises when the teams are announced.
Should Farke gamble on a tactical reshuffle against Newcastle — or stick with his trusted system despite injuries?
