Leeds United head into Wednesday night’s trip to Newcastle buoyed by confidence, momentum and belief, with Daniel Farke insisting his side are capable of competing in any environment.
The Whites travel to St James’ Park looking to extend a seven-match unbeaten run in the Premier League, with the visit to Newcastle United marking their second away fixture of 2026. That run continued at the weekend with a hard-fought draw against Manchester United, a result that further reinforced Leeds’ growing resilience.
Speaking ahead of the Magpies clash, Farke was clear-eyed about the scale of the task — but equally firm in his belief that Leeds can rise to it.
Respect for Newcastle — and Howe
Farke was full of praise for Newcastle and their manager Eddie Howe, describing the Magpies as one of the league’s standout sides.
“For me, also one of the top teams in this league,” Farke said. “Eddie Howe is doing overall a fantastic, fantastic job. For me, it’s one of the big names in this league and also one of the top sides, and they have all the chances to finish in a very similar position to where they finished last season.”
Newcastle’s home form, intensity and atmosphere were also highlighted as key factors Leeds must contend with on Tyneside.
“Newcastle in a home game, they always seem to play even more competitive and with the highest intensity, so it will definitely be a difficult task,” he added.
Belief built on recent performances
Despite the challenge, Farke believes Leeds’ recent performances — particularly against elite opposition — have earned them the right to approach the fixture with confidence rather than caution.
“But we’ve shown also that in difficult surroundings we are capable to deliver performance,” he said. “And if we deliver a performance, then we have a chance also to win points wherever we go.”
That message has resonated within the squad, with Leeds showing composure and consistency during a congested festive schedule.
“It gives lots of confidence,” Farke continued. “Everyone is in a good mood and we know that we have done really, really well against also top sides and big names in recent weeks.
“It gives also the confidence to be capable to go to another difficult place and to show performance and also deliver results even there.”
Momentum meets a major test
Leeds’ unbeaten run has been built on organisation, discipline and growing self-belief, but Newcastle at St James’ Park represents one of the sternest tests available in the Premier League. Still, from recent matches we’ve covered, this Leeds side looks increasingly comfortable embracing those challenges rather than shrinking from them.
Whether that confidence translates into points remains to be seen, but Farke’s message is clear: Leeds will not be travelling north simply to contain.
What’s next?
Wednesday night’s clash could further define Leeds’ early-2026 momentum, with another positive result reinforcing their standing in the league and belief within the group. With fixtures coming thick and fast, performance levels — as much as points — will remain the key metric.
Can Leeds carry their unbeaten confidence into one of the Premier League’s toughest away grounds?
