Tottenham have received positive news over Cristian Romero after medical checks confirmed the defender avoided a serious injury during Argentina’s World Cup win over Egypt.

Romero was forced off late in the dramatic comeback victory, raising immediate concerns because of the knee problems and fitness issues he has managed in recent months.

However, according to El Día de La Plata, the Tottenham captain only suffered cramp in his left calf and is available for Argentina’s quarter-final against Switzerland on Saturday.

Romero injury fears eased before Switzerland clash

The sight of Romero leaving the pitch caused concern for both Argentina and Tottenham, with initial fears that the centre-back could be facing another spell on the sidelines.

Those concerns have now been dismissed.

Medical assessments found no significant damage, and Romero is expected to train normally as Lionel Scaloni prepares his squad for the last-eight meeting with Switzerland.

Argentina’s starters completed recovery work following the win over Egypt, leaving Scaloni with three training sessions to prepare for the quarter-final.

The Argentina coach could still make tactical changes, but Romero’s availability means he should remain in contention to keep his place at the heart of the defence.

Tottenham handed major Romero fitness relief

The news is particularly important for Tottenham because Romero arrived at the World Cup after another season in which his physical condition required careful management.

Despite not being at full fitness at the start of the tournament, the 28-year-old has remained an influential figure for Argentina.

His impact has also extended beyond his defensive work. Romero has scored important headers against Cape Verde and Egypt, earning further praise in Argentina.

La Nacion recently described him as a player who “defends as a marshal and finishes as a No. 9”, reflecting his growing influence at both ends of the pitch.

For Tottenham, the priority will be seeing their captain return from the World Cup without a significant injury. The latest scare appeared worrying, but the diagnosis means there is currently no major concern.

What happens next?

Romero is expected to continue preparing normally for Argentina’s quarter-final against Switzerland.

Scaloni must decide whether to keep faith with his current defensive line, but the Tottenham captain is available for selection after avoiding the serious setback initially feared.

Can Romero continue his goalscoring form and help Argentina reach the World Cup semi-finals?
