Arsenal defender Cristhian Mosquera has made his ambitions clear regarding his international future, insisting his focus is firmly on Spain rather than Colombia. The 20-year-old summer signing has impressed since arriving from Valencia and says he is determined to earn a call-up from Luis de la Fuente’s squad.

Speaking to Cadena Ser, Mosquera said: “Let’s wait and see, that’s the goal (to receive Luis de la Fuente’s call-up). I trained with them. I had the opportunity to train with them and I’m very happy. Luis, the truth is, is a very good person. There are great players in every position. I dedicate myself to working hard at my club, and when the opportunity comes, it’s God who will open the doors for me.”

Spanish influence at Arsenal helping adaptation

Mosquera’s decision could be influenced by the strong Spanish presence at Arsenal. Under Mikel Arteta, the Gunners have added a core of Spanish players including David Raya, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Martin Zubimendi and Mikel Merino. That environment, he admits, has eased his adaptation to life in London.

“It’s true that having Spanish people helps you more. For day-to-day life, for adaptation, it helps me a lot,” Mosquera explained.

The defender has slotted in seamlessly to Arsenal’s backline, stepping up after William Saliba suffered a muscle injury. His composure and maturity have impressed both fans and pundits, and he starred again in the Champions League win over Athletic Club.

Adjusting to Premier League demands

Mosquera also noted the differences between La Liga and the Premier League: “The game is quite different from La Liga. A little more back and forth, more pace. It’s pretty good. When you go into the games, you have to prepare for what’s coming.”

Those adjustments have not slowed his progress, with the youngster quickly establishing himself as a reliable defensive option. His blend of anticipation, timing in duels, and ball-playing ability has led many to tip him as one of Arsenal’s bargains of the summer transfer window.

Analyst verdict: Spain the natural fit

FootballPlace analyst John William believes Mosquera’s stance was inevitable:

“Mosquera has grown up in Spain and developed his game in La Liga, so it makes sense that he identifies with La Roja. His pathway into the Spanish national setup is clearer given his youth training and connections, and Arsenal’s Spanish contingent only strengthens that bond. For Colombia it is a loss, but for Spain he could become a cornerstone defender over the next decade.”

Key insights

  • Cristhian Mosquera insists his international future lies with Spain, not Colombia.
  • The Arsenal defender has already trained with Luis de la Fuente’s squad.
  • Spanish teammates at Arsenal have helped him adapt to life in London.
  • He has stepped into the first team seamlessly after William Saliba’s injury.
  • Mosquera says the Premier League is more fast-paced and demanding than La Liga.

What’s next for Mosquera?

Mosquera’s focus will remain on Arsenal as they push for momentum in both the Premier League and Champions League. His consistent performances could soon earn him a senior Spain call-up, especially with Luis de la Fuente monitoring emerging defensive talent.

If he continues his rapid rise, Mosquera may find himself in contention for Spain’s Euro 2026 qualifiers. For now, he is content to keep delivering at club level while waiting for the international doors to open.

👉 Should Cristhian Mosquera stick with Spain, or would Colombia offer him a clearer route to becoming a senior international regular?
