Coventry lead Frank Onyeka race but talks with Brentford stall

Coventry City remain in pole position to sign Frank Onyeka, but negotiations with Brentford have slowed as the Championship leaders weigh up their next move late in the window.

Frank Lampard’s side have been tracking the Nigeria international for several weeks and are understood to still be leading the race, despite growing competition and a lack of recent progress in talks between the two clubs.

Onyeka’s availability stems from his limited role at Brentford under Keith Andrews. The midfielder has made just six Premier League appearances this season — all from the bench — and has yet to start a league match.

He is not viewed as part of Brentford’s long-term plans, a stance underlined by recent squad decisions. The club have handed Vitaly Janelt a new four-and-a-half-year contract and added teenage forward Kaye Furo from Club Brugge in an £8m deal, reshaping priorities across the squad.

For Coventry, Onyeka offers experience, physicality and tactical intelligence — qualities Lampard values in the middle of the pitch. With promotion firmly in their sights, adding a player with Premier League pedigree could provide a crucial edge during the run-in.

However, it remains too early to draw firm conclusions. While Coventry lead the race, a lack of momentum in talks leaves the door open for rivals if they choose to accelerate.
