Cole Palmer has spoken publicly for the first time since being left out of Thomas Tuchel's England squad for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, insisting he has accepted the decision and is using the summer to reset after a frustrating campaign with Chelsea.
The 24-year-old was one of the most notable omissions when Tuchel named his squad, with the England manager favouring players who impressed throughout the season rather than relying on previous international status. While Palmer admitted his disappointment, he made it clear he has no intention of dwelling on a decision that cannot be changed.
Palmer accepts Tuchel's decision
Speaking to i-D while enjoying a break in Ibiza, Palmer reflected on a season that ultimately ended with World Cup disappointment.
"This season hasn't been the best, but it is what it is. I'm not crying over a decision you can't change, and I hope the lads make it all the way."
Despite missing out on the tournament, the Chelsea playmaker revealed he will still be following England's progress whenever possible.
"If I'm not doing anything, then I'll watch the matches, yeah."
The omission reflects the manager's willingness to reward recent performances over reputation. Palmer's injury-hit campaign left him unable to produce the consistency that made him one of the Premier League's standout performers a season earlier.
Injury-hit season proved costly
Palmer endured one of the most challenging campaigns of his senior career after a persistent groin problem limited both his availability and influence.
He finished the season with 11 goals and three assists in 34 appearances across all competitions as Chelsea struggled throughout the campaign, ending the season without silverware and finishing 10th in the Premier League.
The Blues also suffered a narrow 1-0 defeat to Manchester City in the FA Cup final, capping a disappointing year that ultimately contributed to Palmer missing out on England's biggest tournament.
Rare summer break offers chance to reset
Rather than dwell on his international disappointment, Palmer has taken advantage of his first extended off-season in several years.
The attacking midfielder revealed he intends to switch off completely before returning refreshed for pre-season.
"I'm going to relax this summer, rest for the first time in three or four years, before getting back to what I love."
The break represents an important opportunity after several seasons of continuous football for club and country, with Chelsea hopeful he will return fully refreshed ahead of the new campaign.
Family and business venture keeping Palmer grounded
Away from football, Palmer credits his close family and longstanding friendships with helping him keep perspective following his England setback.
He continues to return regularly to Manchester to watch his father play Sunday League football, reconnecting with the environment where his own journey began.
The extra free time has also allowed Palmer to focus on a personal business venture. His "Cole'd Ice" purified ice brand, inspired by his famous "Cold Palmer" celebration, has been in development for around a year.
"When I'm not playing football, it's something else to think about. It's healthy and something to give back to the fans."
Fresh opportunity under Xabi Alonso
Although missing the World Cup was a major disappointment, Palmer now has the chance to begin a new chapter at Chelsea under Xabi Alonso.
The England international is expected to be one of the key figures in Alonso's rebuild alongside João Pedro and Moisés Caicedo as the new manager looks to guide Chelsea back into Champions League contention.
Based on Chelsea's struggles throughout last season, restoring Palmer to his best form could become one of Alonso's biggest priorities. However, much will depend on whether the midfielder can put his injury problems behind him and rediscover the level that established him as one of England's brightest attacking talents.
What's next?
Palmer will continue his summer break before reporting back for Chelsea's pre-season preparations under Alonso. With no international commitments this summer, he has a rare opportunity to recover both physically and mentally before focusing on helping Chelsea bounce back during the 2026/27 campaign. Strong performances at club level will also be essential if he hopes to force his way back into Tuchel's England plans.
Can Cole Palmer rediscover his best form under Xabi Alonso and earn his place back in the England squad?
