Roma are stepping up their pursuit of Manchester City midfielder Claudio Echeverri, with sources indicating that a loan move is now being discussed between the clubs.

The 20-year-old Argentine, who joined City from River Plate earlier this year, has yet to break into Pep Guardiola’s first-team plans and is expected to leave temporarily in search of regular game time. Roma view Echeverri as a technically gifted creator with the potential to thrive in Serie A — and negotiations are progressing quickly.

According to sources close to the deal, a season-long loan is the most likely structure, with the Giallorossi confident they can offer Echeverri the development pathway he needs. City are open to the move, provided game-time guarantees are met.

Why Roma Want Claudio Echeverri

Echeverri, dubbed “El Diablito” in Argentina, is one of South America’s most promising playmakers. He starred at the 2023 U17 World Cup and had attracted interest from top European clubs before committing to City in January 2024.

However, fierce midfield competition at the Etihad — including Rodri, Kovacic, Gundogan, Bernardo Silva, Oscar Bobb, Foden, and Matheus Nunes — has made it difficult for the youngster to find consistent minutes.

At Roma, manager Gian Piero Gasperini is building a youthful, technically fluid squad capable of challenging for the top four. Echeverri fits the mould, and Roma believe he could flourish in their high-tempo attacking system.

“Echeverri is an artist in tight spaces — what he needs now is the trust and rhythm of weekly football,” said a Roma source close to negotiations.

Analyst Verdict

Echeverri’s ceiling is sky-high — and a spell at Roma could be the ideal launchpad. While he remains raw and inexperienced at senior level, his vision, low centre of gravity, and confidence in possession mark him as a standout talent. Roma's current rebuild makes space for high-upside loanees, and this could be a win-win for all parties.
