Echeverri finds form at Girona after difficult Leverkusen spell

Claudio Echeverri says he is “very happy” at Girona after admitting he endured a “very bad time” during his loan spell in Germany.

The 20-year-old Manchester City loanee made his fourth LaLiga appearance in Girona’s 2-1 victory over Barcelona on 15 February 2026, contributing to the decisive goal late on. The result lifted Girona to 12th in the table and left Barcelona two points behind leaders Real Madrid.

Echeverri joined City in 2024 after impressing at River Plate but featured just three times under Pep Guardiola before heading out on loan. A difficult stint at Bayer Leverkusen followed, where he managed only 270 minutes across 11 appearances.

Speaking to ESPN after the win over Barcelona, Echeverri reflected on his recent struggles.

“I’m here, happy, trying to get back to the version that saw me being sold to City,” he said. “I had difficult months in Germany. I had a very bad time.”

His move to Girona in January offered a reset. The Spanish club are part of the City Football Group, creating a pathway designed to aid development while maintaining continuity in playing philosophy.

Having followed City’s loan strategy in recent seasons, Girona has become a platform for young players seeking rhythm and responsibility. For Echeverri, consistent minutes appear to be the priority.

Echeverri entered the match in the 72nd minute and was involved in the build-up to Girona’s 86th-minute winner. Barcelona players appealed for a foul on Jules Koundé, claiming the Argentine stepped on the defender’s foot.

After a brief VAR review, the goal stood.

“Yes, I stepped on his foot,” Echeverri told El Chiringuito TV. “But I was running fast and perhaps it was accidental. I would have understood if a foul had been called. But luckily we got the victory.”

He also praised Barcelona’s quality, calling them “the best team in the world”, but highlighted Girona’s collective effort in securing the upset.

Girona will look to build momentum after their win over Barcelona as they aim to climb further up the LaLiga table. For Echeverri, sustained involvement and confidence are the immediate targets.

Much will depend on his consistency in the coming weeks. If he continues to influence matches, attention may shift toward his long-term role within Manchester City’s plans next season.
