Claude Makelele has backed former Chelsea teammate Frank Lampard to keep Coventry City in the Premier League, describing the English manager as “exceptional”.

Makelele spent five seasons alongside Lampard at Stamford Bridge and believes his former teammate has developed significantly during his managerial career.

Makelele praises Lampard’s evolution

Makelele and Lampard enjoyed considerable success together at Chelsea between 2003 and 2008, winning two Premier League titles, the FA Cup and two League Cups.

Having witnessed Lampard’s qualities as a player first-hand, Makelele says he is not surprised to see him establishing himself as a manager.

“Nothing Frank does surprises me, because he’s exceptional,” Makelele said.

“As a player he was intelligent, professional, obsessed with performance.”

Lampard’s managerial career has included several different challenges, but Makelele believes those experiences have helped him improve.

“He did exceptional work when he started out in management, then he moved around, and maybe some moments didn’t go his way, because the Premier League forgives nothing.

“I’m genuinely proud of him. He has evolved, and so many coaches never do. Frank understood what football demands.”

Lampard backed to keep Coventry up

The immediate challenge for Lampard is keeping Coventry City in the Premier League, and Makelele believes the former England midfielder has the qualities required to succeed.

“I see him staying in the Premier League, because he has no intention of leaving it,” Makelele continued.

“He has the qualities of a very good coach and the tools to go very far.

“I hope he keeps Coventry up, because then he’ll flourish doing what he does best.”

Makelele believes there are plenty of reasons for optimism surrounding Lampard and his future in management.

“There’s so much to be positive about. He deserves it.”
