Chelsea’s pursuit of a top-four finish took a major blow after they were held to a surprise 2-2 draw at home by Ipswich Town. Despite dominating possession early on, the Blues found themselves two goals down at the break and were forced to mount a second-half comeback to salvage a point.
First Half:
Chelsea started brightly and pinned Ipswich back in the opening 20 minutes, recording 75% possession and six shots, but failed to make the breakthrough. It was Ipswich who struck first in the 28th minute when on-loan Brighton midfielder Julio Enciso slotted home a low cross from Ben Johnson, netting his first goal for the club.
Enciso turned creator just before halftime, floating a delightful ball to the back post where Johnson headed in Ipswich’s second — also his first of the season — giving the visitors a stunning 2-0 lead at the interval.
Second Half:
Chelsea responded instantly after the restart. Just 20 seconds into the second half, Axel Tuanzebe inadvertently deflected a Reece James cross into his own net, cutting the deficit to 2-1.
The hosts piled on the pressure, registering 18 shots and 9 on target across the match. Their persistence paid off in the 80th minute when substitute Jadon Sancho curled a sublime effort into the top corner following a short-corner routine orchestrated by Enzo Fernández.
Despite late efforts from Trevoh Chalobah and Pedro Neto, Chelsea were unable to find a winner.
