Chelsea have secured the long term future of club captain Reece James after confirming the right back has signed a new six year contract at Stamford Bridge.

The England international’s previous deal already ran until June 2028, but the new agreement extends his stay with the club until the summer of 2032. The extension represents a significant show of trust from the club’s hierarchy as they continue building around a younger core of players.

James has progressed from Chelsea’s academy to become one of the team’s most influential figures, both on the pitch and within the dressing room.

The contract extension also aligns James’ deal with Chelsea’s current wage structure under BlueCo ownership, which has introduced a system built more heavily around performance related bonuses rather than high guaranteed salaries.

His previous contract was reportedly structured differently from those signed by many of the club’s newer players, making the renegotiation an important step in maintaining consistency within the squad.

Speaking after the agreement was announced, the defender expressed his excitement about continuing his career at the club where he developed as a player.

“I am over the moon to have extended my contract. Chelsea means so much to me. I have always said I want my peak years to be here and I truly believe we have everything it takes to build on our previous successes.” — Reece James

He also highlighted the club’s long term ambitions under the current ownership group.

“I’m excited for the future under this ownership, sporting directors, coach and all the staff, and hopefully we will lift many more trophies together over the coming years.” — Reece James

Chelsea captain enjoying strong season

James has been one of Chelsea’s most consistent performers this season. Crucially, he has managed to avoid the injury problems that disrupted previous campaigns.

The right back has already made 35 appearances across all competitions, playing a key role both defensively and in Chelsea’s attacking build up.

Since making his senior debut in 2018, James has accumulated 225 appearances for Chelsea and lifted five major trophies, including the UEFA Champions League in 2021 under then manager Thomas Tuchel.

Chelsea leadership value highlighted by club officials

Chelsea’s co sporting directors Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart praised the captain’s leadership qualities following confirmation of the new deal.

“On behalf of ownership and everyone connected to Chelsea, it is a proud moment for all of us to have Reece extend his contract. He is the leader of this team, both on and off the pitch.” — Paul Winstanley and Laurence Stewart

They also stressed the importance of the defender’s connection with the club and its supporters.

“Reece knows what it means to wear this badge and having committed his long term future to Chelsea, we’re looking forward to continuing the journey and working towards further success together.” — Chelsea sporting directors
