Chelsea are edging closer to signing Pep Chavarría, with negotiations for the Rayo Vallecano defender now at an advanced stage as the Blues look to replace Marc Cucurella.

After Cucurella's move to Real Madrid earlier this summer, strengthening the left side of defence became one of Chelsea's priorities. The club now appear close to finding their solution.

Chelsea closing in on £21.5m deal

Chelsea have submitted an offer for Chavarría that is understood to be close to his £21.5 million (€25 million) release clause.

While the proposal has not officially triggered the clause, talks between the two clubs have progressed quickly, with negotiations now entering their final stages.

The 28-year-old is expected to become Chelsea's first-choice replacement for Cucurella following the Spain international's departure to the Santiago Bernabéu.

Alonso wants another attacking full-back

Chavarría fits the profile Xabi Alonso is looking for.

The Spaniard is known for his attacking instincts, energy and ability to provide width from deep areas, qualities that made him one of Rayo Vallecano's standout performers last season.

He made 44 appearances in all competitions during the 2025/26 campaign, contributing one goal and three assists, while helping Rayo reach the UEFA Conference League final.

His style of play also mirrors the wing-back profiles Alonso successfully used during his spell at Bayer Leverkusen, making him a natural tactical fit.

Chelsea continuing defensive rebuild

Chelsea have already strengthened one side of their defence this summer with the arrival of Marco Palestra from Atalanta.

Chavarría would provide competition on the opposite flank, where Jorrel Hato has also been used despite naturally being a centre-back.

The Blues remain active elsewhere too.

Crystal Palace defender Maxence Lacroix continues to feature prominently on Chelsea's shortlist, while Alejandro Garnacho is among the players who could leave Stamford Bridge before the transfer window closes.

Key Points

  • Chelsea are in advanced talks to sign Pep Chavarría from Rayo Vallecano.
  • The proposed deal is worth around £21.5 million.
  • Chavarría has emerged as Chelsea's preferred replacement for Marc Cucurella.
  • The left-back made 44 appearances for Rayo Vallecano last season.
  • Chelsea remain active in the market as Xabi Alonso reshapes his squad.

What's next?

Chelsea will continue negotiations with Rayo Vallecano in an attempt to finalise the transfer. If an agreement is reached, Chavarría is expected to become the club's new first-choice left-back, while attention will then switch to further arrivals and potential departures before the transfer window closes.

Would Pep Chavarría be the right replacement for Marc Cucurella, or should Chelsea have targeted a more established left-back?
