Chelsea are beginning to imagine a new attacking blueprint — one built around the talismanic influence of Cole Palmer and the electric potential of Estevão Willian. Enzo Maresca has confirmed that there is “excitement” inside the club at the prospect of the pair finally lining up together consistently, something Chelsea fans have been curious about since early season. With Palmer back fit for the first time since 20 September and Estevão fresh from a stunning Champions League display against Barcelona, anticipation is building at Stamford Bridge.

Until now, the pair have shared the pitch for only seven competitive minutes, during a chaotic defeat to Manchester United that saw Robert Sánchez’s early red card tear up Maresca’s initial tactical plan. But with Palmer returning from groin and toe injuries and Estevão pushing forcefully for more minutes after Tuesday’s 3–0 win over Barcelona, conditions are finally aligning for their partnership to be explored properly.

Maresca’s tone made it clear: Chelsea believe the combination is not only possible — but pivotal to the next stage of their project.

Maresca: “They can play together”

Palmer and Estevao’s partnership excitement frames the heart of Maresca’s message. Asked whether both players could fit into the same XI, the head coach was emphatic.

“They can play together. It depends on which team we are playing against… but for sure they are excited. The fans are excited to watch both together. We are also excited.” — Enzo Maresca

At the centre of the challenge is positional overlap. Estevão has made no secret of his desire to evolve into a long-term No.10 rather than a right winger, while Palmer is undisputedly Maresca’s first-choice playmaker when fully fit. The balance, Maresca insists, will come through game-to-game adjustments.

Palmer returns — and Chelsea breathe again

Maresca described Palmer as “probably our best player”, underlining his importance after a stop-start season disrupted repeatedly by groin issues. The 23-year-old has played only four matches this campaign but remains central to Chelsea’s build-up patterns, pressing structure and chance creation.

“His team-mates are happy, we are happy, and the most important thing is that Cole is happy. Now we need to give him time to be 100 per cent fit.” — Enzo Maresca

Within the squad, Palmer’s return has lifted confidence. Having followed Chelsea’s rhythm this season, it’s evident how dependent the side have been on his timing, manipulation of central spaces and ability to unlock low blocks. Without him, Chelsea’s possession sequences often stalled in the final third.

Estevão’s rise puts pressure on the selection debate

Estevão’s case for a starting role intensified on Tuesday with an electric performance and a superb goal against Barcelona. Maresca spoke highly of the teenager’s impact and hinted that his growing influence is forcing difficult decisions.

“It’s always good when the ones that start do the right things… They give me a doubt always for the next games.” — Enzo Maresca

Although some reports earlier this season suggested the club would be patient with Estevão’s adaptation, other indications now point to a player accelerating ahead of schedule. His creativity, vertical dribbling and intelligence between lines make him well suited to Chelsea’s possession-heavy game model.

How Palmer and Estevão could coexist

In our view, Maresca’s confidence signals a clear tactical plan taking shape. Because Palmer operates naturally in the right half-space and Estevão thrives when drifting inside from the right, Chelsea could mirror Arteta’s asymmetry at Arsenal: one creator central, the other narrower than a typical winger. Although some fans fear positional conflict, other indications from training suggest the duo combine well in tight spaces.

It’s worth questioning how frequently Maresca can deploy them together without compromising defensive balance. Chelsea’s structure has at times been vulnerable in transition, and adding two attack-first profiles increases risk. But Maresca’s comments hint that he sees this as a solvable puzzle, not an obstacle.
