Chelsea have launched fresh talks with Ajax as they try to sign Jorrel Hato this summer — and address their growing lack of depth at left-back.
The Dutch teenager, who was crowned Eredivisie Talent of the Season in 2024/25, is now high on Enzo Maresca’s wish list. The Chelsea boss is desperate for a new left-sided defender with Ben Chilwell expected to leave and Renato Veiga also likely to move on.
Hato, 19, played an astonishing 50 matches for Ajax last season, starting in both central defence and left-back. His composure, athleticism and leadership at such a young age have caught the eye of several Premier League clubs — but Chelsea are now pushing hardest.
Chelsea’s Backline Needs Urgent Reinforcement
Right now, Marc Cucurella is Chelsea’s only senior left-back, with Levi Colwill and Benoît Badiashile also covering the left-sided centre-back role.
But with Wesley Fofana still sidelined, Axel Disasi linked with Villarreal, and Trevoh Chalobah not guaranteed to stay, the Blues need another reliable option — and quickly.
“Chelsea are looking for a natural left-footer who can play in a back three or at full-back — and Hato fits the profile perfectly,” said a source close to the deal. — Football Place
Liverpool Also Tracking the Ajax Star
Liverpool remain interested too. Arne Slot’s side want a young, left-footed centre-back for their next title push — and Hato is admired by sporting director Richard Hughes.
But Chelsea have already made direct contact with Ajax, while no club has submitted an official bid yet.
Ajax are holding out for a huge €70m fee, but English clubs believe a deal could be struck closer to €50m. Hato is under contract until 2028 and has no release clause.

Analyst Verdict
Hato’s blend of versatility and maturity makes him one of the most in-demand defenders in Europe. With Ajax pricing him aggressively, Chelsea must decide whether to pay top dollar or risk losing him to a rival like Liverpool.

Lets go! Get him - he was outstanding as a left back! The seasons before he played as a CB but it wasn't just good enough, maybe due his age but as a left back he has really progressed very well.
