Chelsea’s recent upturn in form has come despite a mounting injury list — and that concern now looms large ahead of a crucial Champions League trip to Naples.
Chelsea travel to the Diego Armando Maradona Stadium on Wednesday knowing victory is vital if they are to avoid an extra play-off round next month. Sitting eighth in the 36-team league table, there is little margin for error.
While the Blues overcame the absence of key players in their London derby win, Liam Rosenior will be keen to see bodies return as the fixtures intensify.
Here is the latest on Chelsea’s injured players and their potential return dates.
Cole Palmer
Cole Palmer missed the Champions League win over Pafos and the Premier League victory at Crystal Palace due to a lingering thigh issue.
The problem is linked to a groin complaint that has troubled him throughout the season and was particularly noticeable late on against Brentford. Although initially expected to return at Selhurst Park, Rosenior opted to err on the side of caution.
“Unfortunately for us, Cole is not quite right for this one,” Rosenior told Sky Sports.
“He has got a little niggle. He’s not quite 100%, but he has got a chance for Wednesday.”
Potential return date: January 28 vs Napoli (A)
Tosin Adarabioyo
Tosin Adarabioyo was withdrawn as a precaution against Brentford, but subsequent checks confirmed a hamstring injury.
Rosenior has ruled the defender out until at least mid-February.
“Tosin won’t be available for this game,” he said.
“He felt something in his hamstring, which is going to rule him out for the next few weeks.”
Potential return date: February 13 vs Hull (A)
Filip Jørgensen
Filip Jørgensen was forced off at half-time against Pafos after being handed a start ahead of Robert Sánchez.
There was initial concern, but scans have provided reassurance.
“His scan is quite positive and not as bad as we feared,” Rosenior explained. “He won’t be available for Palace, but could potentially be available for Napoli.”
Potential return date: January 28 vs Napoli (A)
Dário Essugo
Chelsea’s most recent setback came on the training ground, with Dário Essugo suffering an unfortunate injury after slipping.
“It’s a real shame,” Rosenior said. “He’s going to be out for over a month, which is disappointing because he’s an outstanding player.”
Potential return date: March
Romeo Lavia
Romeo Lavia has been sidelined since November with a thigh injury. He has returned to light training but is not yet involved with the first team.
Rosenior is determined not to rush the midfielder back.
“I want him back as quickly as possible, but I want him back with no more injuries,” he said. “We want him back where he can get into a flow of repetitive game time.”
Potential return date: February 21 vs Burnley (H)
Levi Colwill
Levi Colwill continues his long recovery from the serious knee injury sustained in pre-season.
Potential return date: Spring / Summer 2026
