Chelsea believe Estêvão can become ‘top-10 player’ as Madrid regret missing out

Chelsea insiders are increasingly convinced they have signed one of world football’s next great stars — and Real Madrid already believe they made a major mistake by not bringing him to Spain.
According to reporting from ESPN Brazil, senior figures at Stamford Bridge think Estêvão Willian has the potential to become a top-10 player in the world within the next three seasons, such has been the speed and maturity of his development since arriving from Palmeiras.

The 18-year-old was signed with enormous expectation, but even those inside Chelsea admit the teenager has outperformed every early projection. His seamless transition into Premier League football, rapid tactical learning and rising influence with Brazil’s national team have intensified the club’s internal excitement.

ESPN Brazil reports that Chelsea staff and directors have been struck by more than just Estêvão’s talent. They admire his focus, discipline and tactical intelligence, traits that are rare in players his age. Coaches expected a committed professional — but he has quickly surpassed that image.

He has absorbed tactical patterns at an elite pace, embraced the physical demands of English football, and “immersed himself” in the team’s structure. His recent goal against Senegal further reinforced the belief that he can reach superstardom far quicker than initially anticipated.

While optimism grows in west London, the mood in Madrid is reportedly quite different.

With Estêvão already influencing games at Chelsea and breaking into Brazil’s first team, sources in Spain reportedly feel he is “one that got away.” Madrid are no strangers to losing South American stars — Vinícius Júnior and Rodrygo famously arrived early — but this time they appear to have hesitated at the wrong moment.
