Chelsea tightened their grip on the Premier League top four race with a 2-0 home victory over Fulham in a west London derby defined by set-piece dominance and VAR controversy.
João Pedro headed the opener deep into first-half stoppage time, his second goal in as many weeks from a corner routine. Enzo Fernandez then converted from the penalty spot early in the second half after a handball decision went Chelsea’s way, despite replays showing the ball had struck João Pedro’s arm earlier in the move.
For Enzo Maresca, this was another controlled display from his side, who have now scored four goals from corners in their last two league games. Fulham, meanwhile, were left furious after Josh King’s early strike was ruled out by VAR for a foul in the build-up.
Match Summary
Chelsea dominated both territory and chances, finishing with a far higher expected goals total of 2.39 compared to Fulham’s 1.13. The game’s first major flashpoint arrived in the 18th minute when Josh King appeared to have given Fulham the lead with a composed finish. However, VAR intervened and the goal was ruled out for a foul on Trevoh Chalobah in the build-up, sparking fury among the away fans.
Just before half-time, Chelsea made their pressure count. Deep into added time, João Pedro rose highest from a corner and powered home a header to make it 1-0, underlining Enzo Maresca’s growing reliance on set-piece routines.
Early in the second half, more VAR drama shaped the contest. A penalty was awarded against Ryan Sessegnon for handball, but replays showed the ball had also struck João Pedro’s arm earlier in the move. Despite Fulham’s protests, the decision stood, and Enzo Fernandez calmly converted from the spot to double Chelsea’s lead in the 56th minute.
Fulham did have moments of threat — Timothy Castagne was denied by a superb last-ditch block from Moisés Caicedo, while Tosin Adarabioyo wasted a free header from a corner — but overall Chelsea were in control after the interval and managed the game comfortably to secure a 2-0 derby win.

The stats reflect Chelsea’s control. Fulham’s higher tackle count highlighted their reactive approach, while Chelsea’s big-chance creation and set-piece precision proved decisive.
Tactical Notes
- Delap injury blow: Chelsea were forced into an early change when Liam Delap pulled up with a hamstring issue. George was surprisingly deployed centrally, instead of João Pedro moving to striker with Estevão at 10.
- Set-piece strength: Chelsea’s fourth goal from a corner in two league games underlines Maresca’s work on dead-ball routines.
- VAR frustration: Both of Chelsea’s goals involved controversy, with Fulham fans furious over the overturned King strike and the handball sequence leading to Fernandez’s penalty.
Analyst Verdict – John William
FootballPlace analyst John William said Chelsea’s set-piece threat is now a genuine weapon:
“Last week it was three goals from corners against West Ham, today João Pedro again. Maresca clearly drills these situations, and it’s giving Chelsea an edge. Fulham will feel robbed by VAR, but the underlying stats show Chelsea were worthy winners.”
Key Insights
- Chelsea win west London derby 2-0 at Stamford Bridge.
- João Pedro (45+9’) & Enzo Fernandez (56’ pen) on target.
- Chelsea scored four of their last five goals from corners.
- Fulham’s Josh King had goal ruled out by VAR after foul.

What’s Next?
Chelsea travel to Brentford next weekend before a huge Champions League trip to Bayern Munich. Maresca will be hoping Delap’s injury is not serious, with squad rotation set to be key.
Fulham return home for back-to-back matches at Craven Cottage, facing Leeds before another London derby against Brentford.
Was VAR right to overturn Josh King’s goal and award Chelsea’s penalty — or did Fulham deserve more from Stamford Bridge?

We didnt play good, we were bad, Enzo the first half wasn't good. We were lucky with the VAR decisions. There's a lot of work to do, Delap will be probably injured and shouldn't start George as a striker.
