Former Arsenal midfielder Charlie Patino has reflected on why his highly-rated spell at the club never developed into a regular first-team role, insisting he has learned to accept the different direction his career has taken.
The 22-year-old, currently on loan at VfL Bochum from Deportivo La Coruña, came through Arsenal's academy and made his senior debut in December 2021.
Patino scored as a substitute against Sunderland in the EFL Cup before making his second appearance in an FA Cup defeat to Nottingham Forest. Those proved to be his only competitive first-team outings for Arsenal.
Patino opens up on Arsenal disappointment
Patino was once regarded as one of Arsenal's most promising academy players, but opportunities under Mikel Arteta did not materialise consistently.
Speaking to Westdeutsche Allgemeine Zeitung, Patino rejected the suggestion that expectations or pressure had been a problem for him.
“I like pressure. Pressure creates diamonds,” he said.
Instead, Patino pointed towards factors outside a player's control, including the preferences of individual managers.
“There are simply certain factors I can’t control. Every player dreams of playing in every game and being in the starting XI, but sometimes coaches see things differently; they want other things.”
Patino's comments offer a measured explanation of his Arsenal experience rather than criticism of Arteta or the club.
“Not everyone’s career progresses smoothly and steadily,” he added. “Everyone has their own path, their own steps. I’m here now and ready for a new challenge.”
Patino's career took different route after Arsenal
After his two senior Arsenal appearances, Patino spent the 2022/23 and 2023/24 seasons on loan with Blackpool and Swansea City respectively.
Arsenal then sold him to Deportivo La Coruña.
The midfielder made eight appearances during his first season in Spain before featuring 31 times in 2025/26 as Deportivo secured promotion to La Liga.
Rather than remaining with the Spanish club for their top-flight campaign, Patino joined Bochum on loan on 31 August.
The move represents another opportunity to establish himself after a career which has already taken him from Arsenal's academy to the Championship, Spanish football and now Germany.
Uwe Rösler talks convinced Patino over Bochum move
Bochum manager Uwe Rösler played an important role in convincing Patino to make his latest move.
“I had good talks with the coach and the club,” Patino said. “He knew me from my time in the Championship. He’s a legend at Manchester City.”
Rösler's existing knowledge of Patino's time in English football appears to have helped make Bochum an attractive destination.
For Patino, the priority is now making the most of another opportunity rather than dwelling on why his Arsenal breakthrough never arrived.
