Fabian Hürzeler has revealed the real reason behind Carlos Baleba’s controversial substitution at Fulham, after the Brighton midfielder admitted he was physically spent and unable to continue.
The Brighton head coach was forced to withdraw Baleba during last weekend’s 2-1 defeat at Craven Cottage, a decision that drew criticism from sections of the Albion support - but one Hürzeler insists was entirely player-led.
Baleba explains substitution to Hurzeler
Baleba had impressed for much of the contest against Fulham, lasting just over 80 minutes before being replaced by James Milner. It marked the 22-year-old’s first start since returning from AFCON duty with Cameroon.
Speaking ahead of Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Everton, Hürzeler explained the situation candidly.
“He was just tired,” said the Brighton boss. “He came to the bench and said, ‘I’m exhausted. I can’t go on.’
“Then we have to make a change. That’s normal in a football game.”
The admission offers crucial context to a moment that had been widely debated among supporters in the days that followed.
“There’s always a background”
Hürzeler went on to stress that while fan reactions are part of football, understanding the reasoning behind decisions is equally important.
“I think it’s really important to let the emotions be part of this game,” he said. “To share your opinion, to be honest about performances and decisions.
“But sometimes it’s also important to understand the background, to understand some reasons behind that. That was the only reason we took him off. He was tired and exhausted, and it’s better to have a fresh player on the pitch.”
Baleba’s display itself was viewed internally as encouraging, representing a step forward after an inconsistent first half of the season.
Baleba still central to Brighton plans
Despite the frustration around the substitution, Baleba remains a key figure for Brighton and Hove Albion heading into the second half of the campaign. He has trained this week and is expected to be available for Everton’s visit to the Amex Stadium.
The midfielder continues to be linked with a potential summer move to Manchester United, but Brighton see him as integral to stabilising performances during a difficult run of results.
Hurzeler addresses wider criticism
Baleba’s situation has been just one flashpoint during a challenging spell for Brighton, who have managed only one win in their last ten Premier League matches.
Hürzeler acknowledged the growing frustration among supporters but maintained confidence in the club’s direction.
“I understand the frustration sometimes,” he said. “They spend so much money, so much time for us. They want to enjoy the win at the weekend, and it’s our responsibility to give that to them.
“We didn’t change anything this week. I’m convinced we are on the right way. Small margins will make the difference. We stick to our principles.”
