Bruno Fernandes has revealed he always believed Michael Carrick would become a top-level manager, claiming he saw the signs years ago as Manchester United continued their winning run with a 2–0 victory over Tottenham.

United made it four Premier League wins in a row under Carrick at Old Trafford, extending the interim boss’s perfect record this season and strengthening his case for a longer-term role.

Fernandes leads as United make it four in a row

United took control of the contest after Tottenham were reduced to ten men, with Fernandes at the heart of everything that followed. The captain delivered the corner that led to Bryan Mbeumo’s opener before sealing the win himself, turning in Diogo Dalot’s cross for his sixth league goal of the campaign.

The result marked another composed performance under Carrick, who stepped in until the end of the season following Ruben Amorim’s departure. Since his return to the dugout, United have won all four league matches, their best run in over two years.

‘I knew he could be a great manager’

Speaking after the match, Fernandes said Carrick’s impact had not surprised him, pointing back to their first experience working together during Carrick’s brief interim spell in 2021.

“I think Michael came in with the right idea of giving the players the freedom to take responsibility on the pitch,” — Bruno Fernandes

The Portuguese midfielder added that he had already shared his belief with Carrick during that earlier period.

“I thought Michael could be a great manager and he’s just shown it,” — Bruno Fernandes

Carrick’s overall record in charge of Manchester United now stands at six wins and one draw across two spells, with victories over Villarreal, Arsenal and Tottenham among the highlights.

Carrick’s pedigree resonates with players

Fernandes believes Carrick’s long playing career at United gives him instant credibility inside the dressing room. The former midfielder spent 12 years at the club, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League.

“Michael has won everything here. He knows what it means for these fans and how much is needed to win at this football club.”

Carrick, meanwhile, returned the praise, highlighting Fernandes’ influence and consistency. “Bruno is always around big moments and has his fingerprints on it. He cares so much about the club.”

Captain urges calm despite momentum

United have now collected more points after 25 matches this season than they managed across the entirety of last year’s campaign. Despite the surge, Fernandes warned against complacency.

“When we win games the confidence goes higher and higher, but it’s very important not to overdo it now,” — Bruno Fernandes

He stressed the need to maintain focus as United look to turn four wins into five.

United can extend their winning run when they travel to West Ham on Tuesday, a fixture that could further intensify calls for Carrick to be considered beyond his interim role. For Fernandes, the message remains clear: progress is encouraging, but consistency now matters most.

Should Manchester United already be thinking about Carrick as a long-term option — or is it still too early to decide?
