Brighton & Hove Albion have been alerted to one of the Netherlands’ most promising defensive prospects after a club scout confirmed he has recommended FC Twente youngster Ruud Nijstad to the Premier League side.

The 18-year-old centre-back has attracted growing attention across Europe following his breakthrough season in the Eredivisie, where his composure and ball-playing ability have impressed observers.

Brighton scout Bert Konterman has now revealed he has personally flagged the defender to the club as a potential future signing.

Brighton scout tips Ruud Nijstad as potential transfer target

Nijstad has emerged as one of the standout young defenders in Dutch football this season after breaking into FC Twente’s first team.

The teenager’s performances have reportedly drawn comparisons with former Barcelona defender Gerard Piqué due to his calmness in possession and ability to build attacks from the back.

Konterman admitted he was particularly impressed by Nijstad during Twente’s match against Feyenoord and quickly made Brighton aware of the defender.

“I really enjoyed the match against Feyenoord. Ruud Nijstad was fantastic.”

“Right, I was impressed. I tipped them off about him.”

However, it remains too early to determine whether Brighton will pursue a formal move for the defender.

Premier League clubs monitoring FC Twente talent

Interest in Nijstad is not limited to Brighton.

Several major European clubs have reportedly been tracking the defender’s development, including Barcelona, Manchester City, Chelsea and Tottenham.

Barcelona were even linked with an attempt to sign the youngster during the January transfer window.

The growing competition for his signature suggests the Dutch defender could become a key target for clubs seeking long-term defensive reinforcements.

Brighton could adopt familiar development strategy

Konterman also suggested that if Brighton move for Nijstad, the club could follow a development strategy similar to previous transfers.

Rather than immediately bringing him into the first-team squad, Brighton could sign the player and allow him to continue developing on loan at FC Twente.

“You could buy them, but then you have to make a deal to keep them at FC Twente for two to three years.”

Brighton have used this model successfully with several young players in recent seasons.

Defender Jan Paul van Hecke and midfielder Mats Wieffer both joined the club as promising talents before becoming regulars under head coach Fabian Hürzeler.
