Brighton transfer link to Damián Bobadilla denied by São Paulo

Brighton interest in Damián Bobadilla has been played down in Brazil after São Paulo insisted no formal contact has been made for the Paraguay international.

Reports earlier this week suggested Brighton & Hove Albion, along with Real Betis and Como, had opened discussions over the 24-year-old midfielder. However, Brazilian journalist Jorge Nicola claims the club have rejected that narrative.

After contacting a senior São Paulo official, Nicola reported that no enquiry or official offer had been received. If any conversations have taken place, they were not conducted directly with the Brazilian side but potentially through intermediaries or the player’s representatives.

For now, São Paulo’s position is firm: there is no active negotiation.

Bobadilla has established himself as a regular starter this season. He has made 11 appearances, contributing two goals and one assist, including a key strike in the victory over Red Bull Bragantino that secured a place in the state championship semi-finals.

He joined São Paulo in 2024 from Cerro Porteño for €1.8m, with the Brazilian club acquiring 60% of his economic rights. That structure complicates any future transfer.

Because São Paulo do not own 100% of the player’s rights, they would only retain just over half of any eventual sale fee. That financial detail may influence negotiations if serious European interest materialises.

Bobadilla remains under contract until December 2027, meaning there is no immediate pressure to sell.

Brighton’s recruitment model often targets emerging South American talent with resale upside, so the link aligns with their broader strategy. However, at this stage, there is no confirmation of direct talks.

Having monitored Brighton’s transfer approach in recent seasons, initial scouting links frequently precede structured negotiations by several months. Still, it remains too early to conclude that a formal move is imminent.

Bobadilla is expected to feature for Paraguay at the 2026 World Cup in North America. A strong tournament could elevate his market value significantly.

For now, this appears to be exploratory noise rather than a concrete transfer development.
