Fabian Hürzeler praised Brighton’s energy and defensive desire after a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Nottingham Forest at the Amex Stadium.

The Seagulls built on their 2-0 win at Brentford by edging past Forest, with Diego Gómez and Danny Welbeck once again finding the net in an unchanged starting line-up. The result lifts morale ahead of a daunting midweek clash with Premier League leaders Arsenal.

Fabian Hürzeler reaction to Brighton 2-1 Nottingham Forest

Hürzeler revealed there were two key objectives heading into the match: generate atmosphere and show defensive commitment.

“We wanted to create two things.

We wanted to create, from the start, an energy in the stadium that everyone will follow us, that the supporters follow us.

I think especially in the end of the game, they had great support for us. It was just impressive.

They helped us get over the finish line so, therefore, it was massive, their support.”

Brighton impressed in the first half and could have extended their advantage, with Kaoru Mitoma and Jack Hinshelwood both going close.

Hürzeler acknowledged that clinical finishing remains an area for improvement.

“In the first half, I think we played really good football. We created a lot of chances. We scored some nice goals.

I think we could be more efficient and more ruthless in front of the goal, than we might have scored more goals.

But, overall, I was pleased and I think it was a deserved win.”

Defensive resolve proves decisive

Forest pushed harder in the second half, but Brighton held firm. Hürzeler highlighted the willingness to defend the penalty area and block shots as crucial to seeing the game out.

“The second thing we wanted to create was a desire to defend and I think we showed it, especially in the second half, where we suffered a little bit.

We blocked a lot of shots, we defended the box quite well and overall I was pleased by doing these two things.”

Solly March’s brief return from the bench also provided a positive moment late on, as Brighton celebrated back-to-back league victories.

Having followed Albion’s recent performances, the renewed defensive discipline appears to be complementing their attacking fluency. However, consistency against stronger opposition will now be the next test.
