‘He’s fantastic’ – Brighton confirm Pascal Groß return as January signing

Brighton & Hove Albion have confirmed Pascal Groß as their first signing of the January transfer window, with head coach Fabian Hürzeler hailing the midfielder’s return as a major boost for the squad.

Groß has rejoined Brighton from Borussia Dortmund for a reported £1m, signing a contract that runs until June 2027. The Germany international returns to the south coast after an 18-month spell in the Bundesliga, bringing experience, leadership and familiarity back to the club.

The 34-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful first spell with Brighton & Hove Albion, making more than 250 appearances across all competitions and playing a central role in the club’s rise in the Premier League.

After joining from Ingolstadt in 2017 for around £2.5m, Groß became one of Brighton’s most influential players, helping establish Albion as a top-flight side and contributing to their highest-ever league finishes and qualification for European competition.

He now returns from Borussia Dortmund with the aim of making an immediate impact during the second half of the season.

Head coach Fabian Hürzeler made no secret of his delight at securing Groß’s return.

“We are really pleased to have Pascal back with us,” Hürzeler said. “He’s a fantastic player and someone I know well and was looking forward to working with when I first came to the club.

“Brighton fans know his attributes, but he brings great leadership qualities to the group. Those qualities, along with his experience and ability, will be a huge asset in the second half of the season.”

Groß’s numbers underline his importance during his first Brighton spell. He made 228 Premier League appearances for the club, scoring 30 goals and providing 45 assists, while operating across multiple roles in midfield and wide areas.

His consistency and intelligence eventually earned him a long-awaited international breakthrough. Groß made his Germany debut in 2023, has won 16 caps, scored once, and was part of the squad at UEFA Euro 2024.

Brighton view Groß’s return as both a footballing and cultural addition. His tactical understanding, calmness in possession and leadership are expected to support a relatively young squad as the season intensifies.

While his role will need to be managed carefully, the club believe his familiarity with the environment will allow for a smooth reintegration.

Groß is expected to link up with the squad immediately and could feature soon as Brighton begin the second half of the campaign. His return adds depth and experience as Albion look to maintain momentum across competitions.
