‘Definite chance’ Brentford return for Joey Veerman in January as PSV reconsider stance

Brentford could revive their pursuit of Joey Veerman this winter, with reports in the Netherlands suggesting there’s a “definite chance” the club will make a renewed effort to sign the PSV Eindhoven midfielder in January.

According to Voetbal International, the Premier League side remain keen on the 26-year-old after narrowly missing out on his signature late in the summer transfer window.

Brentford reportedly tabled an offer worth around €27 million for Veerman in August, but PSV turned it down after the bid arrived beyond the club’s internal transfer deadline. Technical director Earnest Stewart had warned suitors that any late approaches would not be considered — a stance that shut the door on Brentford’s move.

Sources close to the Eindhoven club now claim that PSV may privately regret rejecting the deal. Veerman’s form has dipped this season, and several Dutch outlets have noted that the midfielder has struggled to justify the fee Brentford were prepared to pay.

There’s growing speculation that PSV could be open to revisiting negotiations in the winter window — though Voetbal International suggest that optimism may stem more from PSV’s side than from Brentford themselves.

The Bees, who continue to scout creative midfield options, are expected to monitor Veerman’s performances closely before deciding whether to reignite their interest.

Voetbal International add that Veerman still hopes to secure a move abroad “after several transfer setbacks.” The Dutch international has made no secret of his ambition to play in England, and Brentford’s structured approach and track record of developing technical midfielders could appeal to him.

Whether PSV will soften their stance, however, remains uncertain. With the club still competing in Europe, they may prefer to hold onto Veerman until the summer unless a substantial offer arrives.

In my view, this is a transfer that makes sense for both parties — but only at the right price. Veerman’s composure, vision, and passing range fit perfectly into Brentford’s tactical model under Keith Andrews, particularly if the club anticipate summer departures in midfield.

We believe PSV’s changing tone reflects both financial pragmatism and a recognition that the player’s motivation may wane if a move is delayed again. Brentford’s data-driven recruitment team will see January as a second chance — but only if Veerman’s form picks up.

Brentford are expected to reassess their midfield targets ahead of the January window, with Veerman among several players still on their shortlist. PSV, meanwhile, could face pressure to sell if form and finances don’t improve before the new year.

The situation remains fluid — but with both sides open to dialogue, this could be one of January’s more realistic Premier League transfer stories to watch.
