Brentford have lodged a formal bid for Brazilian defender Iago Teodoro, but the Premier League side are currently trailing Major League Soccer outfit Orlando City in the battle for his signature.
According to Brazilian outlet RTI Esporte, Brentford submitted an official €3m offer to Flamengo in recent days. The proposal is now being assessed by the Brazilian club as they weigh up the best course of action for the 22-year-old centre-back.
Orlando City take early control of talks
Despite Brentford’s move, the report states that Orlando City have progressed further and are currently leading negotiations.
The MLS side made their approach last week and have since accelerated discussions. Their offer also stands at €3m but crucially includes the purchase of 80% of Iago Teodoro’s economic rights — a structure that has pushed Orlando City into pole position.
Interest is not limited to England and the United States. Saudi Pro League club Al-Qadsiah have also shown strong interest, although sources in Brazil continue to suggest the American side are best placed to complete the deal.
Flamengo decision imminent
RTI Esporte adds that Flamengo have already aligned several internal aspects of the transfer. Final approval is now required from club president Rodolfo Landim, who has recently returned from overseas and is expected to meet with sporting director José Boto to reach a decision.
While the transfer fee is a key factor, Flamengo are also closely analysing the structure of the deal — particularly the percentage of economic rights involved.
Brentford interest not new
Brentford’s admiration for Iago Teodoro dates back some time. The same outlet previously reported the Bees’ interest but highlighted the complexity of negotiations due to Flamengo’s ownership model and the defender’s high release clause.
Those complications had initially suggested any move might be delayed, but the latest bid indicates Brentford are now ready to act decisively.
Iago Teodoro remains under contract with Flamengo until December 2026, giving the Brazilian club leverage. While Brentford’s bid keeps them firmly in the conversation, Orlando City’s head start and deal structure currently give them the edge.
