Jamie Redknapp Unhappy With Alejandro Garnacho On Debut sums up the drama of Saturday evening’s Premier League clash against Brendfort. Chelsea thought they had secured three points when Moisés Caicedo fired them into a late lead at the Gtech Community Stadium. Instead, Fabio Carvalho’s 93rd-minute equaliser left the Blues frustrated — and sparked fierce criticism of debutant Garnacho.

Signed from Manchester United for £40 million this summer, Garnacho had initially impressed by creating Caicedo’s goal with a direct and incisive run. But his defensive frailties, long highlighted during his time at Old Trafford, resurfaced at the worst possible time. Sky Sports pundit Jamie Redknapp was scathing in his post-match analysis, accusing the Argentine of “falling asleep” at the back post.

For Chelsea, it was their second draw in four league games under Enzo Maresca. The performance raised familiar questions about concentration and game management, issues that have plagued the club in recent seasons. Was Garnacho’s lapse a one-off or a sign that old habits are set to follow him to Stamford Bridge?

Garnacho slammed for losing his marker before Brentford equaliser

Redknapp pinpointed Garnacho’s error as the decisive moment in the match. The pundit broke down the sequence in detail, stressing that the young winger had failed in his basic defensive assignment:

“What happens as it develops is this is the key battle. Garnacho has a job to do, he’s got to mark Carvalho. That’s your job. Simple as that. Don’t lose him, you’re now one of the defensive players in here. If he gets in behind you, it’s on you. Everybody else is trying to win that first contact; it’s not easy, Brentford have got some big guys. But Garnacho just falls asleep at the vital moment. Ball comes in, Garnacho’s not concentrating, they get that contact and there [Carvalho] is at the back post.” — Jamie Redknapp, Sky Sports

The lapse overshadowed what had been a promising attacking display. Garnacho’s first assist in a Chelsea shirt hinted at his potential value in Maresca’s system, but the winger’s reluctance to track back remains a major concern.

Maresca defends team despite late collapse

Asked after the game whether Chelsea had done enough to win, Maresca insisted his players deserved more. He highlighted the number of chances created, with Cole Palmer and Pedro Neto both going close before Caicedo’s strike.

“I think in the second half, we scored twice. We could have scored two or three more goals. Cole had a chance, Pedro [Neto] had a chance. So I think we did enough. Unfortunately, we lost two points just in the last two or three minutes.” — Enzo Maresca

While the manager’s comments sought to shield his squad from excessive blame, supporters and pundits alike were left frustrated by another example of Chelsea failing to close out a match.

His debut stats highlight both promise and problems: an assist shows his attacking quality, but defensive lapses will dominate headlines until he proves he can be trusted in all phases of play.

Analyst verdict – by John William

Garnacho is a high-risk, high-reward signing for Chelsea. At 21, his talent is clear — direct dribbling, explosive pace, and the ability to produce decisive moments in attack. But his reluctance to defend and track runners could be a tactical liability in the Premier League.

Maresca’s system demands wingers who press and contribute off the ball. If Garnacho cannot adapt, he risks repeating the frustrations that saw him fall out of favour at Manchester United. The next few weeks will be critical in determining whether he grows into a reliable starter or becomes another expensive gamble that fails to pay off.

Key insights

  • Chelsea drew 2-2 with Brentford after Carvalho’s stoppage-time equaliser.
  • Garnacho registered an assist on his debut but failed to track his man defensively.
  • Jamie Redknapp accused him of “falling asleep” in the closing stages.
  • Maresca defended the team, pointing to missed chances.
  • Chelsea have now drawn two of their first four league matches.

What’s next for Chelsea?

The Blues face Manchester United at Old Trafford on 20 September, a fixture that carries extra weight for Garnacho. Returning to face the club that sold him just weeks ago, the Argentine will be desperate to prove his worth and silence his critics.

For Chelsea, the match represents an early test of resilience under Maresca. Can they turn promising passages of play into consistent results? Much will depend on whether Garnacho can cut out lapses and show he is more than just an attacking spark.

👉 Can Garnacho win over Chelsea fans with his attacking flair — or will defensive lapses define his time at Stamford Bridge?

Still painful.... Garnacho brought more into the game than Gittens did, but yes it was his man to defend.. very lazy, very sloppy.
