Manchester City stars Bernardo Silva and Rúben Dias have come under fire in Portugal after a heated exchange with supporters following the national team’s defeat to Ireland.

The incident, which took place as players left the pitch, has sparked strong criticism across Portuguese media — with respected journalist Nuno Farinha calling their actions “unacceptable” during a live debate on CNN Maisfutebol.

“Unacceptable from two senior internationals”

Farinha argued that both players, as senior figures with vast Premier League and international experience, should have maintained composure even in the face of frustration and provocation from fans.

“They must ignore that and thank the fans who applauded,” Farinha said. “They have heard far worse in stadiums and know how to deal with hostile reactions. What happened was unacceptable.”

According to eyewitness reports, the two Manchester City players appeared to confront a section of travelling Portuguese supporters who had directed criticism towards the team following the loss. While the exchange did not escalate physically, video clips circulating online show Dias in particular gesturing toward the crowd in visible anger.

“Captains cannot behave this way”

Farinha singled out Rúben Dias as the more culpable of the two, noting that as a leader for both Portugal and Manchester City, his reaction set a poor example.

“Rúben Dias’ gesture looked confrontational, almost like a threat,” Farinha said. “Captains cannot show that type of response — it damages the image of leadership.”

The panel on CNN Maisfutebol agreed that while emotions can run high after disappointing results, national team veterans must show restraint and professionalism.

Farinha added that both Dias and Bernardo Silva, who are among the squad’s most influential figures, carry a greater responsibility to set the tone in difficult moments.

Ronaldo’s absence and leadership vacuum

The debate also raised questions about Portugal’s leadership structure in the absence of Cristiano Ronaldo, who was sent off earlier in the same match. Farinha and other panellists suggested that Ronaldo’s expulsion created a “vacuum” in on-field authority, leaving the team more emotionally vulnerable after the final whistle.

“Ronaldo’s presence usually calms or channels that frustration,” one pundit noted. “Without him, emotions spilled over more easily.”

Portugal still in control but under scrutiny

Despite the defeat, Portugal remain in a strong position in their World Cup qualifying group, needing just one win from their remaining two matches to seal top spot. However, the incident involving the Manchester City duo has intensified media scrutiny and prompted calls for better conduct from senior players.

Our View: Experienced players must set the standard

In our view, Farinha’s criticism is justified. Both Silva and Dias are seasoned professionals who have faced intense scrutiny at club and international levels. Confronting fans — even amid provocation — undermines the example they should set for younger teammates.

Dias, in particular, has built his reputation on discipline and leadership at Manchester City. This isolated lapse will not define him, but it does serve as a reminder that composure is as vital to leadership as passion.
