Former Manchester United forward Dimitar Berbatov has come to the defence of Kobbie Mainoo, describing the youngster’s current spell out of the team as “really cruel.”
Mainoo, 20, has yet to start a Premier League game this season under Rúben Amorim, who has preferred a midfield pairing of Bruno Fernandes and Casemiro. It marks the first real setback in what had been a rapid rise for the England international, who was denied a summer loan move.
Speaking to Daily Mail Sport, Berbatov said the midfielder’s situation underlines football’s harsh realities.
“It’s a very tough situation, especially for a young player. It shows you how football can be a really cruel game at times because Kobbie Mainoo was playing, he reached the England national team, he was going up, up and up — and all of a sudden, he’s not being picked.”
Berbatov continued: “Now the question is, does he stay positive and wait for his moment again, or move somewhere to play regularly and get his confidence back? I’d like to see him play because the talent is there — the decision-making, the calmness and that arrogance with the ball that you need is already there even at his age.”
