Bayern Munich have been handed fresh encouragement in their pursuit of Luka Vušković after high-profile praise from Ivan Rakitić, with Tottenham now facing growing scrutiny over the teenager’s long-term future.

The 18-year-old centre-back impressed again at the weekend as Hamburg held Bayern to a 2–2 draw in the Bundesliga, a performance that has intensified interest from Europe’s elite clubs.

Vušković shines against Bayern in Hamburg draw

Hamburg took the lead at the Volksparkstadion through a Fabio Vieira penalty before Harry Kane drew Bayern level. The visitors started the second half strongly, with Luis Díaz making an immediate impact from the bench to swing momentum in Bayern’s favour.

However, Vušković responded emphatically. The Tottenham loanee rose to head home Hamburg’s equaliser, registering his fourth goal of the season and his second since the Bundesliga resumed after the winter break. Beyond the goal, his composure and reading of the game stood out against elite opposition.

Speaking to Sky Germany after the match, Rakitić made his stance clear, suggesting Bayern should prioritise a move for Vušković at the end of the season.

“All of European football is talking about him right now. Bayern Munich needs to step up their game. I believe this lad has to go to Bayern Munich,” — Ivan Rakitić

The former Barcelona midfielder added that Vušković already looks ready for the highest level, describing him as one of the most exciting young defenders currently emerging in Europe.

Bayern interest already established

German outlet SportBILD reported last month that Bayern have been monitoring Vušković closely and were even offered the opportunity to sign him, though details of the approach were not disclosed. The Bavarians are expected to continue tracking his progress through the remainder of the campaign.

Vušković remains under contract at Tottenham until 2029, having joined from Hajduk Split for £12 million in September 2023. His development in Germany, however, has accelerated discussion about whether Spurs can realistically retain him beyond the summer.

‘Next step’ talk puts Spurs on alert

Rakitić also questioned whether Tottenham would be able to resist interest from Europe’s biggest clubs, suggesting only “four or five” teams are truly at the level Vušković could move to next.
Lothar Matthäus echoed that sentiment, delivering glowing praise for the teenager’s maturity and football intelligence after the match.

“At 18, he plays as if he’s already played in three World Cups. This player is so intelligent. You rarely find that,” — Lothar Matthäus

Speaking to BILD, Vušković offered a measured response when asked about his future, insisting no immediate decision has been made.

“We’ll decide after the World Cup what happens next, what’s best for me,” — Luka Vušković
