Bafodé Diakité says AFC Bournemouth’s recent success in developing players for Europe’s elite clubs played a key role in his decision to join the Cherries from Toulouse this summer.
Speaking to RMC Sport, the French defender opened up about his motivations for joining the Premier League side, his ambitions for the future, and his surprise at Bournemouth’s remarkable start to the 2025/26 season.
Bournemouth’s Transfer Record a Key Factor
Bournemouth’s rise under Andoni Iraola has been one of the league’s biggest success stories. Beyond their on-field improvement, the club has also gained a reputation for helping young players take the next step.
Recent years have seen the Cherries sell Dominic Solanke to Tottenham Hotspur (2024) and last summer allow Dean Huijsen, Milos Kerkez, and Ilya Zabarnyi to join Real Madrid, Liverpool, and Paris Saint-Germain, respectively.
When asked whether that track record influenced his decision, Diakité admitted it did — while adding that he has big dreams of his own.
“It’s a criterion we take into account. Why not dream big ourselves? I know my transfer here may have surprised some, but I wanted to experience the Premier League. It’s the best league in the world, and I want to see what I can do.” — Bafodé Diakité, via RMC Sport
At 1.84m, Diakité acknowledged he doesn’t fit the typical mould of a tall, physical Premier League centre-back, but he’s determined to prove that ability and intelligence can make just as much difference.
“I know that clubs like tall centre-backs in my position. That’s not me, but why not show that it’s not just the big, imposing players who can be good?” — Diakité
France Ambitions on Hold
The 24-year-old, who has represented France at youth level and featured for the Olympic squad in 2024, is yet to make his senior debut for Les Bleus. But he insists he’s in no rush, preferring to focus on club form before anything else.
“I’ve never put any pressure on myself about that. I’ve always told myself, ‘You have to do well at club level to see what happens next.’ If things are meant to happen, they will. I’m focused on doing what I need to do, trying to progress as much as possible with my club.” — Diakité
“Didn’t Expect to See Us Here”
Diakité also admitted he’s been pleasantly surprised by Bournemouth’s early-season success. Iraola’s team have stormed to second place in the Premier League, just four points behind leaders Arsenal and one ahead of Tottenham.
“I didn’t expect to see us here. When I arrived, I was aware of our strengths because we have quality players and a quality coach. But seeing us in second place was unexpected. The whole team is working towards playing attacking football, and that allows us to always give more.” — Bafodé Diakité
Our View: Bournemouth Have Become a Launchpad
In our view, Diakité’s comments highlight Bournemouth’s growing reputation as a stepping-stone club with ambition. Under Iraola, they’re not just surviving in the Premier League — they’re developing talent that’s catching Europe’s attention.
For Diakité, the move looks well-timed. He’s playing regularly in one of the world’s toughest leagues, under a coach known for developing defenders, and in a side that’s punching well above its weight.
