Bournemouth are pulling out of talks to sign Bafodé Diakité from Lille, after seeing two bids rejected and growing frustrated with the Ligue 1 club’s refusal to negotiate.

The Bafodé Diakité Bournemouth transfer saga looks set to end without a deal, despite the Cherries agreeing personal terms with the 24-year-old defender weeks ago. According to Foot Mercato’s Santi Aouna, Lille have held firm on their €40m asking price — far above Bournemouth’s final €30m proposal, including bonuses.

With Dean Huijsen already sold to Real Madrid and Illia Zabarnyi linked with PSG, Bournemouth are in desperate need of defensive reinforcements. But with negotiations at a deadlock, Andoni Iraola's side have decided to turn their attention elsewhere.

Why Bournemouth Backed Away

Despite making Diakité their top defensive target this summer, Bournemouth have now cooled their pursuit. Their €30m package was seen as competitive in the current market — but Lille’s lack of flexibility has pushed the Premier League side to reconsider.

“The lack of progress and Lille’s €40m demand have made Bournemouth walk away from Diakité,” reported Santi Aouna on X. — Foot Mercato

Who Are Bournemouth Targeting Now?

The club are now considering Sevilla’s Loïc Badé as an alternative, according to multiple reports. The 25-year-old French defender is also attracting interest from Tottenham, Villarreal, Marseille, and Sunderland, but Bournemouth are said to be particularly keen.

Badé is more experienced at the top level and may cost significantly less than Lille’s €40m valuation of Diakité.

Analyst Verdict

This may turn out to be smart business by Bournemouth.

While Diakité is an excellent athlete and profiles well for the Premier League, €40m for a defender with no top-five league experience outside France is a major gamble. Badé, by contrast, has Champions League pedigree, La Liga experience, and a more modest price tag.

If Bournemouth can pivot quickly and secure a deal for Badé, it could strengthen their backline without breaking the bank.

Key Insights

  • Bournemouth have decided to walk away from €40m-rated Diakité
  • Two bids (up to €30m) were rejected by Lille
  • Sevilla’s Loïc Badé is now under serious consideration
  • Bournemouth still searching for Huijsen/Zabarnyi replacements
  • Other clubs (Spurs, Villarreal, Sunderland) also interested in Badé

What’s Next?

Expect Bournemouth to accelerate talks with Sevilla over Loïc Badé in the coming days. With Zabarnyi’s future uncertain, a new centre-back signing is a clear priority for Andoni Iraola before the Premier League opener.

Are Bournemouth making the right call walking away from Diakité — or should they meet Lille’s demands?
