Mikel Arteta has challenged his Arsenal players to show they have the mentality required to go on and win the Premier League title, following a damaging home defeat to Manchester United.
The 3–2 loss at the Emirates has cut Arsenal’s lead at the top of the table to four points, just a week after they had the chance to stretch their advantage to nine. It was a frustrating afternoon for the Gunners, who started well but were ultimately punished for costly mistakes.
Arsenal took the lead inside the opening half-hour when Lisandro Martínez turned the ball into his own net. However, a loose pass from Martin Zubimendi gifted Bryan Mbeumo the equaliser and swung the momentum firmly in Manchester United’s favour.
Although Mikel Merino levelled late on after a stunning strike from Patrick Dorgu, Arsenal were undone in the closing stages when Matheus Cunha curled home the winner.
Arteta responds to Vieira criticism
Former Arsenal captain Patrick Vieira questioned the team’s mental strength in the aftermath of the defeat, suggesting there were still doubts about whether this group can see out a title race.
Arteta did not shy away from the comment when asked about it.
“That’s fine,” he said. “We accept every opinion, where it comes from and the reason behind it. At the end, we have to show the mental strength that we have on the pitch on matchday.”
The Arsenal boss pointed to the contrast between recent performances.
“We were absolutely brilliant in Milan, and today we weren’t that good,” Arteta added.
“I don’t know if it was mental. We were poor, especially technically, in certain aspects of the game. Against a team like that, when you make those mistakes, they punish you. That was the difference.”
Fans frustration acknowledged
There was a tense atmosphere inside the Emirates as misplaced passes and heavy touches drew groans from the crowd, with some boos audible at full-time.
Arteta, however, refused to criticise the supporters.
“We all want to win,” he said. “The crowd is trying to help the team make the best decisions and win the game. We have to go through that.
“We have to do more. Maybe what we did wasn’t enough. We have to do our very best — there’s nothing else.”
Pressure back on in title race
Despite remaining top of the table, Arsenal’s margin for error has narrowed. The defeat served as a reminder that fine details — and lapses in concentration — can swing momentum quickly at this stage of the season.
Arteta was clear where responsibility lies.
“When you do your very best, you can rest in peace,” he said. “Today, we tried, but we weren’t efficient enough and we were punished for our own mistakes.”
