Arsenal head to Stamford Bridge tonight with significant selection concerns, as Mikel Arteta weighs up his options ahead of the first leg of the Carabao Cup semi-final against Chelsea.

The Gunners remain alive in all four competitions this season, but their preparations for the trip across London have been complicated by a mounting injury list — particularly in defence.

Defensive doubts dominate Arteta’s thinking

The biggest concern surrounds William Saliba, who missed Arsenal’s FA Cup victory over Portsmouth and remains a major doubt. His absence would be especially damaging given Arsenal’s limited defensive depth.

Leandro Trossard is also a doubt after sitting out the same cup tie, though Arteta’s primary headache lies at the back.

Arsenal are already without Riccardo Calafiori, who is expected to be sidelined for several more weeks with a muscle injury. Cristhian Mosquera is similarly unavailable as he continues his recovery from an ankle problem.

There is no positive update on Piero Hincapie either. The Ecuador international limped off against Liverpool last week with a hamstring issue and is definitely ruled out of the Chelsea clash.

Should Saliba fail to recover in time, Arteta may once again be forced to pair Christian Norgaard alongside Gabriel Magalhaes in central defence — a solution born of necessity rather than preference.

Full-back reshuffle possible

Form concerns around Myles Lewis-Skelly could prompt further changes. Jurrien Timber may shift to left-back, allowing Ben White to start on the right.

In goal, Arteta faces a notable decision. Kepa Arrizabalaga has started every domestic cup match so far this season, but the importance of a semi-final raises the question of whether David Raya is recalled.

Midfield stability and attacking choices

There is better news in midfield, where Arteta is expected to restore his preferred trio. Martin Zubimendi, Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard are all in contention to start.

In attack, Gabriel Martinelli will hope to retain his place after scoring a hat-trick against Portsmouth. On the right, Bukayo Saka is expected to start.

Arteta still has decisions to make up front. Kai Havertz is unlikely to be fit enough to start, while Gabriel Jesus has looked sharper than Viktor Gyokeres. However, Arteta may persist with Gyokeres as he looks to play his summer signing into form.
