It felt like the perfect January coup: a chance for Mikel Arteta to bolster Arsenal’s firepower with Paris Saint-Germain’s versatile winger Marco Asensio. Instead, the Spaniard ended up at Aston Villa—and that gamble may haunt the Gunners’ title bid.
Late in the window, whispers spread that Asensio, frustrated by limited minutes at PSG, was weighing up loan options to reclaim his best form. Arsenal scouts watched closely; Villa, under Unai Emery, moved decisively. By deadline day Asensio had opted for the Midlands, leaving Arsenal with a gaping hole in attack just as Gabriel Jesus and Kai Havertz picked up injuries.
When Asensio first arrived from Real Madrid to PSG, few imagined he’d be on the move again so quickly. Yet Villa’s promise of regular starts in both Premier League and European football proved irresistible—especially when Arsenal hesitated, holding out hope of signing Ollie Watkins from Villa instead.
Arteta later admitted that balancing multiple targets led to inaction. By the time Arsenal were ready to pounce, Villa’s offer was sealed. Now, Asensio has produced four goals and three assists in just 12 appearances, reminding everyone why he was once among Europe’s most sought-after forwards.
The Deadline-Day Twist
Arsenal’s interest in Watkins distracted the club from Asensio’s availability. Villa bundled through with an irresistible package—regular starts, European nights, and Emery’s stamp of approval. Arsenal missed out, and their front line has felt the pinch ever since.
Arteta’s Transfer Gamble Backfired
Arteta’s January strategy hinged on juggling two deals. “We were offered Watkins first and hesitated,” a source close to the club revealed. “By the time we focused on Asensio, he was off to Villa.” That hesitation left the Gunners short on attacking depth.
| Metric | Asensio at Villa | Watkins at Villa |
|---|---|---|
| Appearances | 12 | 8 |
| Goals | 4 | 2 |
| Assists | 3 | 1 |
| Minutes per goal/assist | 176 | 240 |
Key Stat:
Asensio has contributed directly to a goal every 176 minutes, compared to Watkins’ 240.
What’s Next for Arsenal?
With Asensio thriving, Arsenal are now circling Viktor Gyökeres and Benjamin Šeško for the summer. Yet the question remains: can they learn from January’s misstep? Arteta must decide whether to pursue Asensio again—reports suggest Villa’s loan includes a £13 million buy clause.

That would have been a sign, but tbh it is always if if if and that doesn't count in football. This article wouldn't have been written or the story would be totally different if he wasn't playing that well. and to be fair he wasn't playing that well for PSG, so.
