Arsenal defender Jurrien Timber has moved quickly to shut down any suggestion that his versatility could hold him back, insisting it is a strength for both himself and the Gunners.
The 24-year-old, speaking to Algemeen Dagblad in quotes relayed by Ajax Showtime, explained that while Dutch football culture can sometimes view full-backs-turned-centre-backs as being “promoted,” he doesn’t share that view. Instead, Timber believes being trusted across several roles only increases his value to Arsenal and the national team.
Timber knows about setbacks. His first season in England was wrecked by a cruciate ligament tear that kept him sidelined for 253 days, costing him 53 games. But since his return, he has become one of Mikel Arteta’s most reliable performers. Last season he played 48 times across all competitions, clocking up 3680 minutes, showing durability as well as flexibility.
With Arsenal chasing silverware in both the Premier League and Champions League this year, Timber’s adaptability could prove decisive. But is there a risk he becomes a “jack of all trades” rather than nailing down one role?
Timber’s Response on His Versatility
“In England, they don’t worry about it at all. It’s also nice for a coach. I see it as an advantage. Isn’t it a positive thing that you can play in multiple positions? Yes, it spreads your chances. The important thing is that you play, and that’s how you maximize your chances.” — Jurrien Timber, via Algemeen Dagblad
Timber’s comments underline a key cultural difference. In the Netherlands, positional shifts are often framed as hierarchy. In England, adaptability is seen as an asset — particularly in Arteta’s system, where inverted full-backs and fluid defensive lines demand intelligent, multifunctional defenders.
Timber’s Arsenal Numbers

These numbers underline Timber’s growing importance. After missing nearly a year, he quickly established himself as a cornerstone in Arteta’s back line, proving capable at right-back, left-back, and centre-half.
Analyst Verdict
FootballPlace analyst John William:
Timber’s versatility is less a weakness and more a tactical weapon for Arsenal. In Arteta’s fluid build-up, a full-back who can step into midfield or slot centrally is invaluable. Timber’s Ajax schooling gives him the composure and technical base to thrive in these hybrid roles.
The only caution is workload. Being used everywhere can stretch a player thin — Arsenal must balance his minutes carefully to avoid another long-term injury setback. But as long as he’s managed well, Timber is exactly the kind of flexible defender elite clubs need.
Key Insights
- Jurrien Timber dismisses claims versatility hurts his career.
- Missed 253 days through ACL injury in first Arsenal season.
- Returned strong in 2024/25 with 48 appearances, 3680 minutes.
- Played mostly as right-back (36 apps), also LB and CB.

What’s Next
With Arsenal challenging on four fronts this season, Timber is expected to rotate across defensive positions depending on injuries and opponent set-ups. His role could be particularly crucial in the Champions League, where tactical adaptability often separates contenders from pretenders.
The Netherlands debate over positional “status” may continue, but for Arsenal, Timber’s only concern is delivering consistently — no matter where he plays.
Should Arteta settle Timber in one role — or keep using him as Arsenal’s defensive all-rounder?

He was always a CB at Ajax. Hats off to Arteta too see him more as a wingback, instead of as a CB. One of the best in the league.
