Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini has spoken publicly about Manchester United winger Antony, confirming the Brazilian is keen on a return to Spain after a successful loan spell last season.

Antony joined Betis in January and quickly rediscovered his spark, playing a key role in their push for Europe under Pellegrini. His pace, pressing and confidence in one-v-one situations made him a fan favourite, and Betis are eager to bring him back this summer.

The problem remains Manchester United’s stance. Erik ten Hag’s replacement, Ruben Amorim, wants a permanent sale, while Betis are holding out for another loan deal. Negotiations have dragged, frustrating United’s hierarchy, who believe the Spanish side are stalling in hopes of forcing a late-window compromise.

Pellegrini on Antony’s Betis Future

Asked directly about the winger during his press conference, Pellegrini was clear on the situation:

“I haven’t spoken to Antony. We all know he was very happy during the six-month period he was with us. We want him back, he certainly wants to come back, but it depends on what the transfer holder, which is Manchester United, wants to do with him.” — Manuel Pellegrini

The Chilean coach’s words underline Betis’ desire — and Antony’s — but also the financial challenge of convincing United to sanction another loan.

Antony featured 26 times for Betis in all competitions during his six-month spell, contributing nine goals and five assists. His 82% passing accuracy showed renewed confidence in build-up play, alongside his trademark direct dribbling.

Analyst Verdict

Antony’s revival in Spain suggests the Premier League was a tough fit, but in La Liga he looks closer to the player United paid £86m for in 2022. His pressing intensity and freedom under Pellegrini allowed him to play with more joy.

For United, the challenge is financial: loan deals won’t offset the significant outlay they made. From a business standpoint, Amorim is right to push for a permanent exit, but the lack of suitors willing to pay may leave another loan as the only realistic outcome.

Key Insights

  • Pellegrini confirms Antony “wants to come back” to Betis.
  • United want a permanent sale, Betis pushing for a loan.
  • Negotiations dragging, frustrating Old Trafford hierarchy.
  • Antony contributed 10 goal involvements in 22 Betis appearances.
  • Betis remain hopeful of a late-window deal.

What’s Next

Talks are expected to continue until deadline day. United’s preference remains a permanent sale — ideally recouping part of their original investment — but Betis are banking on the English club softening their stance.

If no agreement is reached, Antony could be frozen out at Old Trafford, with Amorim already looking at other wide options. Betis, meanwhile, may need to explore cheaper alternatives if United refuse to budge.

Should Manchester United cave to another Betis loan for Antony — or hold firm for a permanent exit?

Well unless Manchester United pays the rest of his wage, he's not going back. Real Betis isn't able to cover his current wage, simple and probably dont even have the money to buy him.
