Almost two months after Ruben Amorim’s departure from Manchester United, one of his closest coaching allies has lifted the lid on what went wrong at Old Trafford.

Adélio Cândido, who worked alongside Amorim during his time in England, has suggested that the staff’s footballing ideas were never fully implemented — a claim that will inevitably reignite debate around that turbulent spell.

Speaking to Portuguese newspaper A Bola while in Angola, the assistant coach reflected on the experience with measured honesty.

“Our ideas were not applied” – Amorim assistant reflects on Manchester United spell

Cândido struck a balanced tone, insisting there were positives to take from the period despite its abrupt ending.

“The experience is always experience, whether the balance is good or bad, we always leave with learning.” — Adélio Cândido

He praised the club’s supporters and the wider environment in Manchester.

“In Manchester I really liked the city and the way the fans live football, more focused on the project than the immediate result.” — Adélio Cândido

However, the central frustration was clear.

“What I liked least was, without a doubt, feeling that our ideas were not applied in their entirety.” — Adélio Cândido

That admission hints at structural or internal resistance, though Cândido stopped short of detailing where those limitations originated.

Handling pressure at Old Trafford

Manchester United’s environment rarely allows for calm transitions, particularly during periods of tactical change. Cândido insisted the coaching group remained steady despite scrutiny.

“I think the fact that we are young helped us deal with the pressure. We always had a positive day-to-day at work.”

He dismissed the idea that external criticism played a decisive role.

“Honestly, I do not follow opinions outside the working group. Something always ends up reaching us through social media, but I really do not pay attention to any of that.”

From the matches covered during that period, United often appeared caught between implementing a new structure and reverting to familiar patterns. However, it remains difficult to determine how much of that stemmed from adaptation time versus internal alignment.

Bond with Ruben Amorim and future plans

Cândido’s relationship with Amorim stretches back to the early stages of the Portuguese coach’s managerial career at Casa Pia.

“Ruben is like an older brother to me… many discussions and many manifestations of affection.”

While currently taking time away from the touchline, he hinted that a reunion could be inevitable when Amorim’s next opportunity arrives.

Looking longer-term, Cândido also expressed a desire to contribute to Angolan football development, even admitting managing the national team would be a “dream”.

Having a laugh. What a riddance - should have changed the system, my days.
